Chapter Seventeen

Rumbles was closed by the time I drove by, not that I could visit Molly anyway. I’d need a cover story for my fresh injuries first. But it was too light outside to go flying, and I didn’t really feel like going back to the cottage, so I pulled into the Safeway parking lot and dialled Eden.

“I was hoping you’d call,” she said. “And please don’t tell me you’re only now getting home from your date?”

Was that just last night? “I’m afraid the date wasn’t quite that successful.” In the aftermath of the Tribunal’s visit, my dinner with Dean had been relegated to distant memory. “I know it’s Saturday night and all, but do you feel like getting together?”

“Sure. Alex won’t be home for a few more hours. How about I come by?”

“No,” I blurted out. “I’m not at home.”

“O . . .kay,” Eden said. “Is everything all right?”

“Yes, for now, but I could use your advice.”

“Why don’t you come over here then?”

“I’d rather meet somewhere else.” I hadn’t forgotten James’s warning about making her and Alex a target of the Tribunal. “Have you eaten yet?”

“No. Do you want to meet at the Turtle?”

“That sounds perfect.” The Neon Turtle was a Thai fusion restaurant tucked into a row of trendy shops not far from the other side of the park. Eden had introduced me to it.

The Turtle’s neighbourhood was busy, which put parking at a premium. The closest spot I could find was two blocks away on a dead-end residential street, abutting the park.

The heady aroma of Thai curry wafted out to greet me when I opened the door. The place was like those little SenSen liquorice breath fresheners—tiny but packing a lot of punch. A dozen tables crowded the restaurant’s narrow floor space. Dim lighting added to the warmth of the textured yellow walls. I spotted Eden at a table halfway down. I used my hair like a curtain to hide the tape and the worst of the bruising and ducked my head as I seated myself.

“There’s room outside on the patio . . .” She stopped abruptly when she got a look at my face. “What happened?” she gasped, reaching out to lift my hair away.

“Avery fixed me up. I’m okay.” I re-established the curtain to camouflage my injuries from the other diners.

“This didn’t happen on your date?”

“No. The date was a failure, but not because of Dean.”

“I think you’d better tell me what happened.”

I began with Dean. Eden was a quality listener, rarely interrupting and never second-guessing my actions, even the daft ones. “I’m sorry,” was all she said when I told her how the date ended.

The satay and coconut chicken curry with cashews arrived with a big bowl of rice. We ate family style, sharing the fragrant dishes. My teeth ached where Sebastian had hit me. I skipped over my encounter with Case and picked up again with the alarm going off. She dropped her spoon and clutched my arm at the point where the Tribunal showed up in my house and squeezed tighter when she heard about Mason and then James.
