CHAPTER TEN

malik

The blessing of working with young, part-time web developers was that none of them were early morning people. I made it home in time to change, run a brush over my hair and comb through my beard, take care of my morning routine and fumble with the coffeepot before the team arrived.

I usually had the studio to myself for a few hours in the morning. Between 9 and 10 AM, people would filter in for the day. In the evening twilight, the headcount would drop until it was just me and, occasionally, Corey overnight.

I had shuffled to my office with my coffee and a tumbler of ice water and was deep into my daily habit of reading and filing away news stories to read later.

No pings on my India Parker google alert, I noticed. I wasn’t sure how long I needed to keep that subscription active. I really only used it to keep up on how she was doing. Thanks to the previous day’s bravery, I could get my news first-hand now.

“Yo, Malik.”

Brandon thumped down the hall toward my office and stood in the doorway in light blue work coveralls with Hines Foreign Auto emblazoned down the sleeves. He was stocky and broad-shouldered like Dad, but had inherited our mom’s light, freckled skin tone and her wiry hair. He also had enormous feet, so the steel-toed boots he had to wear at the shop made the floor shake with each step. I heard him before I saw him.

“Yo, B.” I spun around in my chair to face him. I tipped my head in a nod as he dropped into the chair in front of my desk. “You working a full shift today?”

“Yeah. We’re finishing up an engine rebuild on a Porsche 911 and it’ll go faster with two hands. I need to get it out of the shop today. Clarissa has some holiday reception for her job tonight, so I can’t work late. She’s getting the top performer award, so we have to go, I guess.”

Brandon’s fiancée Clarissa was the talented real estate agent that located and contracted the lease for the warehouse. I owed so much to her and couldn’t wait until she was officially family, rings and all. The event was planned for next summer, but Brandon was getting antsy and hinting at eloping just so he didn’t have to squeeze himself into a tux.

“You guess. Tell Riss I said congrats.” He emitted a grunt in the affirmative and got up. “Hey, wait. So you won’t be around tonight either? What’s happening with the team, then?”

“That’s why I came in early. I wanted to see how far Corey got on the fixes I gave him. He did a good job last night.”

“Yeah, he was kicking ass, from what I could see. How far down the bug list did he make it?”

“He kicked it way down. I think the big errors that would stop a game are pretty much taken care of. I gave the team a list to go through level by level today since I’ll be out.
