Clint had dinner plans with his mother, so it was just me and Selene at the house that evening. In some ways, I was losing track of what it was like to live alone. Before Selene, I spent the majority of my nights in silence, killed only by turning on the TV to whatever I could find that was halfway interesting. It wasn’t that I’d minded being on my own, but now that I had company, I realized that maybe I’d been lonelier than I’d been willing to admit, even to myself.

As I sat down on the couch beside Selene to watch one of her favorite shows, I couldn’t help but smile at the contented look on her face. Maybe we’d both been lonely. My Aunt Lavender meant well, but she didn’t make for good company most of the time. She lived too much in her own head and tended to forget about those around her—Selene included.

Of course, my sympathetic and sentimental thoughts quickly vanished in the morning light when I awoke to the persnickety cat sitting on my chest, caterwauling a song of her own invention:

“Hey, I wrote a song for you, Cora. It’s called … there’s no food in my bowl! I’m starving. Look at me, I’m skin and bones, but you lay there lazy as a toad, a tooooad!”

I glared at her from above the seam of my coverlet. “That doesn’t rhyme, and nobody’s getting fed until I go to the bathroom. Maybe next time, try not using my bladder as your own personal trampoline.”

Afterward, I stumbled about the kitchen, feeding Selene and getting the coffee pot going. It wasn’t much, but it was our little routine.

“You’re really going to the shop again today?” Selene asked when she finished noshing on her fancy cat food.

I glanced up from my bowl of oatmeal. “Of course.”

“Ugh. I think you should read this book, it’s called The Four-Hour Workweek.”

I arched a brow. “Oh, yeah? Does it have a winning lottery ticket stuffed in the pages somewhere? Because if not, I don’t think something like that would be of much help.”

Selene paced the length of the kitchen, her tail swishing in time with her ranting. “Look, all I’m saying is that you should live a little. All this work, work, work … it’s exhausting!”

I couldn’t help but smirk. “Okay, and which part is exhausting for you? For the most part, you just nap in whatever part of the shop is getting the best sunlight.”

The cat stopped and peered up at me. “Would it blow your mind if I said I was worried about you?”

I blinked. “Actually, yeah. It kind of would.”

I lifted a hand to the side of my head and made an explosion gesture, complete with sound effects.

Selene swirled away from me and stalked out of the room, muttering under her breath.

I smiled and shoveled a bite of oats into my mouth.

Despite Selene’s lecture, there was work to be done. I couldn’t wave a magic wand and replenish my stock, make sales, and clean.
