Chapter Twenty-Five

Molly

Molly flipped through her closet, passing through frilly things as she searched for the most perfect gown. The theatre was sure to be an experience like no other. A place where stories came to life before her eyes.

“Hurry up!” Victoria called from her waiting spot on Molly’s bed. “It’s rather boring waiting for you to choose something.”

Molly grabbed her outfit of choice and walked out. “How’s this?”

“Looks positively darling.” Victoria smiled.

Molly stared at the periwinkle gown with its glittering stones and bobbling ribbons.

That’s when it hit. The familiarity of the moment—Victoria on her bed, dresses strewn across the covers—brought on waves of memories from the night of the Prescott’s dinner. Everything twisted upside down, tumbling over her.

“Here.” Victoria held out a cup of tea, taking the gown into her grasp, and placing the porcelain cup into Molly’s waiting fingers.

“I’m sorry,” Molly whispered. She held the cup close, savouring the comfort as the steam billowed up to kiss her cheeks. Just from the aroma, she knew Victoria had made it perfectly; unsweetened and brewed to a rich flavour.

“What’re you sorry for? Never apologize for what happened after Desmond left,” Victoria said briskly. She placed a strong arm around Molly and stared into her eyes. “And don’t you dare let a boy make you feel like less than what you’re worth.”

She stood from the bed and walked over to Molly’s dresser to play with the bits of jewellery on display. “That boy was never good enough for you.”

Molly hid a thankful smile behind her cup. “I don’t think it’s fair of you to hate Desmond so much.”

Victoria examined a gold chain. “I don’t hate him. I just have plans if he ever shows his face around here again.”

Dribbles of tea burnt her lips as she giggled. “It would only be fair if he knew these plans so he could avoid them.”

“Well, George knows them. I’m assuming he’ll let Desmond know for me if he gets the chance.”

Molly’s face soured at the name she had no desire to hear. “Can we not talk about him?”

“We can talk about Desmond who treated you like rubbish, but you don’t want to talk about George?”

“Correct.”

“You’re twisted.”

“So are you.” Molly joined Victoria by her jewellery. She slid her cup onto the dresser and lifted the pearl drops that would match her gown best. But also the crimson stones which would be an accent in daring contrast.

“Definitely the red,” Victoria said.

Molly grinned. “Do you think?”

“I know.” Victoria held Molly’s shoulders as they gazed upon their own reflections in the mirror. She swept back Molly’s hair and held an earring up to its proper place. “The same way I know that Desmond never treated you good enough.”

With a dream-like sigh, Victoria retreated back to the bed, lying in a heap of gowns that smothered all her curves.

Molly turned back to her reflection, mulling over more than just earrings.

“Alright, girls.” Their mother swung her coat off her shoulders and handed it to the reception desk, revealing her gorgeous plum velvet gown with embroidered scrolls along the torso and sleeves.
