Chapter Sixteen
He handed her a rough bouquet of flowers and then couldnât seem to look her in the eye.
âThank you, Mr. Campbell.â
âColin, I keep telling you. Weâre not so formal here.â
âYes, I know.â She couldnât resist teasing him. Heâd asked her many times since the horseback ride to call him Colin but she still resisted. âI made those oat cakes Morag said you liked. Iâd like to know what you think.â
âThat is very nice of you, wifeâ And that was why she thwarted him on calling him by his given name. Really, her name may be three syllables but it truly wasnât that difficult to say. Still the man insisted on calling her âgirlâ or âwifeâ. It was enough to make her grind her teeth. But the flowers were pretty and no one had ever given her flowers, even picked in a field ones, before. They smelled so lovely she couldnât help burying her face in them. âThe smell reminded me of you. They smelled like sunshine.â Now he wasnât just looking her in the eye, he looked like he wanted to kiss her again. Oh, she hoped so. The man kissed like a prince.
Would he think her too forward if she went up on her toes just a little? Last night she had been very forward, pretending to stay asleep when he carried her upstairs. She thought maybe he knew she wasnât but he took her to his room anyway. She was past kidding herself. She was coming to like the man far too much and yet every few days he would still leave to go on one of his business trips and leave her home. She had even asked him to take her along but he complained that he wasnât set up for traveling with a wife yet. To make matters worse the castle was running well now and she was bored sitting around the place with nothing to do.
Sheâd been in contact with her solicitors and they assured her that the transfer of stock from her parents was progressing smoothly. What would Colin think to know about her little hobby? She hoped he was appreciative of what she could do. So far he had been with other more suitable things. Heâd even listened when she had suggested a new route to bring in supplies that should save time and goods from being ruined. She did like to surprise him with her little hints and he seemed to like it too. The last bath she had walked in on him to fill the linen chest and then stayed to wash his back. He groaned and grunted like Eleanorâs dog being scratched. She was scandalized when he invited her into the tub with him, but she was intrigued also.
He reached for her hand and tucked it into the crook of his arm, not because it was the gentlemanly thing to do at some ball but because he seemed to truly enjoy having her close. She had already given up on thinking him a beast, though she still used the name to tease him.
