Chapter Fifteen

Gwen’s breath hitched. It was painful to hear.

“Gwen, I never stopped loving you. That’s why it was so hard for me to know that you had moved on and possibly to my brother. It killed me to think that you had changed so much that you were going along with what your parents wanted.”

“What?” Her hands cupped his face. “You love me?”

Drew threaded his fingers through her curls. “With every beat of my heart.”

Gwen closed her eyes, savoring his words. “I never stopped, either.”

Drew tilted her head up to him, rubbing his thumbs along her cheeks. “You still love me?”

Gwen opened her glistening eyes and smiled. “With every breath I take.” She answered him with their practiced lines. He would always say to her that he loved her with every beat of his heart, and she would answer that she loved him with every breath she took. It might have been a little corny, but it was something that was theirs.

Drew pulled her onto his lap, carefully so that they didn’t fall off the log and looped his arms around her. “I don’t want to waste another minute being without you. I need you in my life.”

Gwen straddled his legs, linking her arms over his shoulders. “For so long, you were the only light in my world. I don’t want to lose that again.”

“You won’t.” Drew slowly leaned toward her, bringing his lips ever closer to hers, giving her time to say no. Giving her time to decide she didn’t want to pursue the passion simmering within them.

He brushed his lips across hers once―so lightly, it was barely a touch. He nudged her lips again with a little more pressure. Drew was trying to keep a tight leash on his control.

Gwen leaned up and pressed her mouth to his, ending his teasing and taking the kiss she had longingly dreamed about for the past three years.

He groaned into her mouth and took over, slanting his mouth over hers, deepening the contact. Drew’s tongue swept inside her mouth to twirl with hers, fueling their fire.

Gwen sighed at finally having his lips against hers as they both became lost to the incredible sensations. She ran her hands down his broad shoulders and over his hard chest, savoring the feeling of being in his arms once again.

Drew tightened his fingers in her hair and pressed her closer, one hand running down her back to her hip. He gave her a squeeze before gliding his hand back up to her shoulder blade.

Gwen broke off the kiss, inhaling some much-needed air before leaning back and nearly knocking them both off the log. She lost her balance and would have toppled into the stream if his arms hadn’t tightened around her.

“Careful.” He grinned at her. She was so cute when she was flustered.

She started to laugh, thinking about both of them falling into the water.

“I missed your laugh.”

She quieted at his words. “It’s been lonely without you. There have been so many things I’ve wanted to talk to you about or tell you…”

Drew brushed her hair back from her face.
