Chapter 7

She stepped out onto West End Avenue, tightened her scarf around her neck, looked around and saw Warren walking toward her. “My car is right down the block,” he said, taking her arm and tucking her close. “Hopefully we won’t encounter much traffic, and we’ll have time for coffee or something.”

“You’re an angel to get out so early in order to be with me. I can use some coffee.”

In the car, her teeth chattered, and she hoped he didn’t notice, but he must have because his next words were, “You’re not to worry. These doctors know what they’re doing. Now, I want you to put your head back and rest. I’ll wake you when we get there.”

She rested her head and closed her eyes, but she didn’t try to sleep. How could she, as ridden with anxiety as she was? After a time, the car came to a stop, and she felt his arm around her shoulder.

“We’re early. We have time for breakfast,” he said, “so I suggest we stop here.” He ate a hearty breakfast of fresh fruit, waffles, bacon and scrambled eggs, but she could barely manage to consume a small glass of orange juice and a little bowl of cereal. He chided her for not eating more, and she knew he had her interest at heart, but she couldn’t force down another bite.

“I’ll have some coffee,” she told the waitress.

Later he drove the three blocks to the clinic, parked in the parking lot, took her hand and walked with her to the receptionist. I can do all this myself, she thought, and I would if I was alone, but it’s so good that he’s here.

“You may follow me,” a nurse told them, and took them to a small waiting room on the fourth floor of the building. “He’s already been prepped for surgery, so you can’t see him. It’ll be a good while. I’ll be back.”

The hours passed. Why didn’t they take that clock off the wall in the waiting room? She closed her eyes, wrapped her arms around her middle and rocked. “What’s taking them so long?” she asked Warren. “Can’t they just come out for a minute and tell us something?”

He tightened his arms around her. “Have faith. The nurse told us it would be a while.”

“But he’s been in there almost six hours.”

“I know, and I hurt for you, but try to be patient. They’ll be out soon.”

Her cell phone rang and she rummaged around in her purse, couldn’t find it and gave up. “It may be your sister,” he said. “Want me to look?”

She didn’t want to seem to fall apart, so she opened the bag, dumped its contents into her lap, got the cell phone and answered it. “Hi, sis. No word yet. What? Warren’s with me. I’ll call you as soon as we know how he is, okay? Right. Bye.”

At two, seven hours after their vigil began, a doctor appeared. Both Warren and Jackie jumped to their feet and ran to the doctor.
