Chapter Seven

Sadie still did not know what to make of the new emotions within her. Laith made her smile, she laughed, and anyone on Rum Cay could say it was very rare for her to laugh.

It was early afternoon when the black ship of Laird Davidson sailed easily though the boundaries to the pirate stronghold.

Laith, his man Graeme, and Ella stood with Sadie as they watched the rowboat come to shore. It was not only Finn who arrived, but she was surprised to see Bridget as well as her husband helped her from the boat to the sand.

They embraced first before introductions were made.

“I do not expect you, my friend,” Sadie said warmly after they separated but still held hands.

Bridget smiled and the wind tossed the tendrils of her hair that was pinned back from her face. Her dress blouse and corset was a dark blue and she wore the tartan of her husband as a skirt. They were both dressed formally, no doubt for the meeting that would happen by sunset. “It was best for me to travel with Finn if we are using our position with the Queen to mediate this matter brought to your shores,” Bridget answered and looked at her curiously. “You look well, Sadie.”

“As do you,” Sadie answered. “Let me introduce you to Captain Laith Mackay and his second, Graeme. Laith, this is Laird and Lady Davidson.”

“Aye it is my utmost pleasure to make both your acquaintances,” Laith bowed formally.

“It seems you have bitten off a bit more than you can chew,” Finn said bluntly. “Why steal the man’s slaves? I thought the MacKay line gave up its thieving ways.”

Laith face turned to grim stone. “Aye, the MacKays have given up their ways to better serve the crown and have the Duke of their lands now be master. As for me, I will not see people be locked up and treated no better than animals, I care not who he is.”

Finn nodded. “It does not help that the vendetta Commander Seymour holds against you adds fuel to the fire. We’ve heard of it, even here in the islands.”

“The vendetta works both ways,” Laith answered. “If he does not leave, I will see him dead.”

“I like this one,” Finn told his wife. “He is brutally honest.”

“Are these the freemen and women that were his servants?” Bridget asked.

Sadie nodded. “Eight have decided to stay in Rum Cay. We are in the process of helping them build lodgings, two are children that Doctor Laura has taken as her own.”

“The rest will go with us,” Bridget said firmly. “I have no doubt, they could fare well along the Captains in the island chain, but I would rather them settle in Barbados under our charge, lest Commander Seymour decides to do something absolutely thoughtless.”

“There was no trouble coming into the stronghold?” Sadie asked.

Bridget laughed. “He would not dare. We fly the colors of the crown with our main flag. We are envoys of her majesty in the Caribbean.”

“Who does business with notorious pirates,” Laith pointed out.
