Hudson sat in the Duke of Sinbrough’s study listening to his friend plan his upcoming masquerade. There were probably better uses for his time, but he couldn’t think of any just then. In fact, there was only one thing he could think of on repeat—Claudine.

That kiss had perhaps been the chastest in his entire life, but nothing had ever excited him more than her lips beneath his. Hudson wanted another opportunity to kiss her, but this time, he would taste her fully. He was shocked he had not done it that night. He couldn’t stop thinking about her and what he should have done. It was a loop that repeated over and over again.

“Are you even listening to me?” Sinbrough asked.

“Of course, Your Grace,” Hudson said in a droll tone. “Masquerade. Decorations. Musicians.” He rolled his hand in a dismissive tone. “All intriguing...”

“You’re a cad,” the duke said. “And a terrible friend.”

“The worst,” Hudson agreed. “Does that mean I am no longer invited?”

Sinbrough snorted. “I should rescind your invitation, but I won’t. I’m a forgiving sort, after all.”

Hudson yawned. “So forgiving,” he agreed. He should ask the duke to invite Claudine. Would she even attend? If she was aware of the type of party the duke threw, she might avoid it. She was not a scandalous sort of woman. She may be a widow, but that didn’t mean she would be willing to attend a masquerade that was quite lewd at times. “I’m fortunate to have such a congenial and well-intentioned friend as you.”

“Damn right you are,” the duke said. “I invited a few new widows to this one.”

“Say what?” Hudson sat up straighter at the duke’s announcement. His brandy sloshed around in his glass and he’d nearly spilled it. “What new widows?” Had he met Claudine? He sure as hell hoped not. A lot of women fell willingly into the duke’s arms and if he had his way with Claudine, he might have to hurt his friend.

“The Countess of Moreland, for one,” the duke said. “Her husband was the worst sort of scoundrel. She deserves to have a bit of fun, and since she’s out of mourning, I thought perhaps she might enjoy a good masquerade.”

Hudson tilted his head to the side. Had he ever met Lady Moreland? He didn’t think he had. “Are there any other widows?”

“The Countess of Dryden,” he said. “Though she is more recently widowed. I don’t think she’ll care much for propriety. I’ve heard she’s into all things decadent.”

“Ah,” he said. “I’m acquainted with that widow.” The Earl of Dryden had been his guardian when he was a boy. He’d been to his wedding when he married his young bride. He had been a good thirty years her senior. It was clear he had only married the young lady to get his heir, and she hadn’t appeared thrilled with the marriage. After she had given birth to the heir, she had kept her distance from her elderly husband. There were a lot of rumors about her taking many lovers, though he didn’t know if any of it was true.
