Cari has been quiet the entire flight to the Air Realm. We left the Fire Realm the minute the extra ships showed up, one of them to collect Tor and Steel. Their goodbye hangs heavy between the three of us, but I spotted Blaize’s ship trailing after them—he walks the line of madness I love to dance with, but he’s never let Steel down before. And it offers some comfort as we head into the unknown minus two of our strongest allies.

“Darling,” I say when she hasn’t stopped staring at a spot on the metal table in the gathering area of the ship. It’s just me and her. Talon’s in the cockpit, guiding the ship to the Air Realm.

Cari blinks and looks up at me. “Do you think it will be in ruins?” she asks. “Like the last two?”

I can feel the worry rippling down our bond, feel the blame she’s already wrapping around herself. I move from my seat, settling next to her and tucking her into my side. “We’re almost there,” I say instead of answering. The odds aren’t in the Air Realm’s favor, not after what we’ve seen. “It’s out of our control.”

Normally, I’d delight in the chaos of it all, in the unpredictable nature of the ruthless Shattered Isle king. But not this time. Not when there is so much innocent bloodshed. Not when it pains my mate so damn much.

Her thoughts and memories are so loud I can’t help but hear them, see them play out in my mind as if they belonged to me. Memories of her suffering as a youngling, struggling to be the stealthy killing machine her father wanted her to be. Flashes of assassins her age or three times it, fighting her, beating her, judging her.

Anger rises, the itch to slice my shadows into someone is fucking overwhelming. I close my eyes and breathe deeply, clenching my fist against my knee in an effort to quell the urge to kill and slaughter and maim for what my mate has suffered. Anyone who had a hand in it, in her tragic upraising, in the brutality of her training. I’ll slice into their minds, paint their worst fears with a master artist’s hand until their panic consumes their soul—

“Lock,” Cari says, her hands on my cheeks as she climbs into my lap. “You’re shaking.”

I open my eyes, noting my shadows have blotted out almost all the light in the room, cocooning us in darkness.

“You may not want to sit so close, darling,” I say through clenched teeth as I try to reel in my power. I’ve always struggled to control the chaos within me, the instant urge to repay injustices against me or those I love with ten times the pain in which they were delivered.

She holds my gaze, staying right where she is, perched with a knee on either side of my hips, her hands on my face, eyes on me like I’m something to be cherished, not feared. “I’m not afraid of your rage,” she says, and I shudder beneath her.
