KING’S VALLEY HIGH School held its annual Homecoming football game the following Friday night. It was an event all the Winslows attended as religiously as Easter service. All four of Polly’s brothers had been star players in their day, each helping their team to win the division championship in their respective years. People hailed them as hometown heroes, and they loved every minute of it. This year, in fact, Terrance and Jack, her two oldest brothers, would ride on the alumni float during the halftime parade.

Polly sat in the bleachers with her family, her hands burrowed deep in the pockets of her thick wool jacket. It was a perfect night for a football game, the air crisp and clear, the smell of hotdogs and popcorn drifting from the snack stand. High school students roamed back and forth along the grounds in front of the grandstand, scarcely paying attention to the game as they jostled and teased and flirted. The cheerleaders shivered between chants and routines, burrowing into their crimson and gold block jackets.

By halftime, King’s Valley was ahead by ten points. It looked like the home team would win easily. Polly stood up, eager to move around after sitting on the metal bleacher for so long. She followed Ellie along with Terrance’s two sons, Steve and Mark, to the snack stand.

Halfway there, someone grasped her arm from behind. “Hey, Polly. How’re you doing?”

She concealed her instant cringe behind a bright smile as she turned around. “Hey, Jimmy. Did you just get here?”

“I had to work late tonight,” Jim Bolton replied with ill-concealed self-importance.

“Gee, that’s too bad.”

“Since my boss promoted me to Manager of New Accounts, I’ve been very busy.”

“My mom said it was Assistant Manager,” Polly said distractedly.

Jim’s face reddened. “I pretty much run things,” he replied stiffly.

She felt sorry for him in spite of herself. “Are you here alone?”

“Yes. Your mother invited me to sit with your family.”

She would. Jim Bolton would always be her mother’s backup plan for her daughter. “I’ll see you up there, then.” She turned away.

Jim sidled up next to her. He was nothing if not persistent. “Going to the snack stand? I’ll come with you.”

She shrugged.

Jim walked with her to the snack stand and stood a little too close for comfort as they waited in line. Ellie and her cousins had already purchased their snacks; they smiled at Polly in passing, their mouths greasy from nacho cheese. Polly wished the line would move a little faster. Jim was inching closer to her by the second. She smelled onion on his breath. Fast food dinner, no doubt.

“Your hair smells like wildflowers,” he whispered, way too close to her ear.

She turned sharply, her head smacking him in the nose. Hard. He’d been hovering just an inch away. He put his hand to his nose, wincing in obvious pain.

“Oh, Jimmy. I’m so sorry! Are you all right?”

She reached out to touch his hand. Blood trickled through his fingers. “Oh, gosh.” She could barely contain her giggles. It was horrible of her to laugh.
