Chapter Eleven

The Frost tomb looked exactly the same as they had left it. Hope Frost still lay there, a broken skeleton and a grinning skull. It made the hair on the back of Monroe’s neck stand on end. His lion was more subdued here, though. Small blessings. It was a violent thing in his chest, and he didn’t know what he was going to do with it.

The scent of blood reached his nostrils and he rubbed his nose hard, hoping that it was just his imagination. He had moved the lid completely off of Hope’s coffin. There were more inscriptions on the inside that he hadn’t noticed before.

Stones skipping against each other made him whirl, lifting his hands defensively before himself. Carlos flinched back from where he stood in the doorway between the two rooms.

Monroe dropped his hands as guilt and shame washed over him. “You should still be in bed.”

Carlos shook his head as he edged around the room, keeping the coffin between the two of them. “I’m healed. Doesn’t even hurt anymore.” He stared down at Hope’s remains for a moment before glancing back up. “You nearly killed me.”

He was right. Monroe’s lion growled, not liking to hear it, but Monroe nodded. “I know. I’m sorry.”

“I wanted to kill you.”

“I know.” Monroe’s voice was a whisper as he lifted his hands. “I can’t get my claws to go back in.”

“Me, neither.” Carlos lifted his own hands, the sharp claws ending his fingertips. “What’s happening to us, Monroe? And don’t say it’s a curse.”

“If you have a better explanation, I’m all ears. All the tests came back clean, but we’re getting worse. And look.” He pulled his shirt down to show the black spot. It had grown, his skin cracked and blistered like a hot poker had been taken to it. The shade of black seemed completely… unnatural. Darker than midnight, darker than charcoal. “This isn’t natural, Carlos. And look.” He pointed to the inscriptions on the inside of the coffin. “There’s more.”

Carlos frowned.

Monroe continued. “I did more research. Hope was proudly and openly a witch of some sort as well, but they were shifters, too. Apparently, Hope claimed that she could turn humans into shifters as well. People came to her from all over the continent to take her potions and become shifters.” He shook his head. “Ironic, isn’t it? How they wanted to be shifters at that time when so often in history we have been treated as animals or weapons.”

Carlos rounded the tomb. His eyes skimmed over the writing and he shook his head. “She wasn’t a witch; she was a Charlton. I don’t believe in magic.”

Monroe sighed. He was too tired and too full of guilt to be angry. “I didn’t until this happened.”

“So. If Hope told people she was a witch, that means they weren’t innocent victims after all.”

“They were.” Monroe rubbed the back of his neck. “Where they were living, it was illegal to be hanged for witchcraft. The judge who ordered their deaths called them both witches as an excuse to punish Charity for not sleeping with him.
