Dax

His heart drummed in his chest. For some reason, Dax was more amped up over this date to a fair than he had been that first night he arrived at Olivia’s house. The day cooperated – it was a warm sunset, and training ended early. Dax smiled to himself, feeling rather charmed.

He parked his black sedan next to a white pickup, trying to park as close to the front as possible Since he was a few minutes early, he waited in his car until he texted her right at five pm.

I'm here.

I'll be out in a minute.

Taking that as his cue, Dax unfolded his long body out of his car and strode toward the double glass doors of the small business plaza. Her office was the end unit, adjacent to two other small offices.

As he stepped onto the front sidewalk by the main doors, a gray flash caught the corner of his eye. At first, he disregarded it – just another car leaving the parking lot at the end of the workday. Yet a sensation at the back of his neck told him to take another look.

Not a gray car, a silver sedan. Dax paused on the edge of the walkway.

No way. It can’t be the same car, can it?

Olivia had said the ex stopped bothering her.

Maybe he was lying in wait.

That thought brought him to a standstill as he studied the car. Was it the same vehicle he had seen in front of Olivia’s a couple of weeks ago? And if it was, could the driver be her ex? Was he stalking her, but she didn’t know it?

The car pulled into a parking spot closer to the side of the business plaza, on the real estate’s office’s open side. Something about the guy didn’t seem right.

Dax narrowed his gaze at the guy who exited the vehicle and approached the walkway, assessing him as he would any enemy combatant. A button-down and a pair of gray slacks. An officer worker.

Probably not the ex, then.

Tension rolled off Dax’s shoulders as Olivia pushed open the glinting door and joined him on the walkway. To his surprise, she popped up on her toes and brushed a light kiss on his freshly shaved cheek.

Dax tried to pretend that kiss didn’t send a thrill to his bones, much like when he was in high school with her. What had started with resentment and baggage had become easy and contented, so easy, in fact, that he didn’t think twice about sliding his arm around her waist to escort her to his car.

“Hey, Olivia!” a voice shouted behind them.

Dax’s entire body set on edge. He didn’t have to see behind him to know it had to be the button-down shirt guy. The tone and the implicit threat of the words was like being back in the desert and hearing an insurgent threat.

Dax released Olivia and shoved her behind him as he spun around.

The man in the nice pants stormed up to them.

So he wasn’t an employee, Dax thought.
