It took them almost no time to find us.

And I mean almost no time at all. Sloane and I had just shuffled out of the alley in which we'd parked the car, our backs to the wall and our eyes flitting from one building to the next ahead of us, when we heard shouting from the other side of the street. And then the pounding of feet.

It didn't take a fucking genius to put the pieces together. Someone was shouting and very obviously running toward us, and we were on the run and well aware that before long, someone would find us and try to capture us.

I realized, in that slowed-down way that you realize things when you're in a tense situation, that the moment when Reno's men found us was evidently already here.

Shit.

I grabbed Sloane's hand, turned, and pounded up the sidewalk, heading away from the lights of the neighborhood we'd just been in and toward anything that looked like it might be shelter. Darkness. Abandoned buildings. Broken-down cars. We had guns with which to defend ourselves, but they were in the bags slapping against our legs as we ran, which made them completely useless.

Stupid, stupid, stupid to have put them away. I knew what we were going to be facing in here. Why the hell hadn't I kept a gun in my hand?

I saw another turn up ahead and jerked Sloane through it, praying that this was an alley that led to another opening rather than some sort of dead end, where we'd be trapped. We hurdled over trash and boxes in the narrow space, the walls close around us and the whole place smelling like leftover Italian food. I swerved when several rats appeared out of nowhere, and behind me, Sloane jumped like she'd been practicing how to avoid rats her entire life.

When she landed, we pressed forward, the light at the end of the alley a promise that on the other side, we'd find humanity, and perhaps safety.

Probably not, though, considering we were running from men who most likely had guns pointed at our backs. Any rational human being was going to get out of our way rather than standing up and telling the guys chasing us that they really shouldn't be doing that, but I didn't give one single fuck. As long as there were people, I was guessing Reno's guys would be at least slightly less likely to fire. And people meant buildings. And chairs and tables and umbrellas and whatever else they came with, all of which I could throw back at our pursuers.

We burst out of the mouth of the alley and turned right, both of us so in sync that it was like we planned it, and then we were sprinting for the first café in our path, plowing through the tables and chairs on the sidewalk and doing our level best to leave as much mayhem behind us as we could. Building a virtual obstacle course for Reno's guys.

Or whoever the hell was chasing us.
