She acted as naturally as she could while working on her designs. She even moved her things into the library where she couldn’t be distracted by the garden windows. Her work carried on until her aunt called her to a quiet dinner in the large dining room to have cucumber soup and chicken in a lemony sauce. Even while she ate, she struggled not to think of Emilio, especially since most of the meal came from the garden.

Then came more questions from Aunt Seraphina’s end of the enormous table. She kept prodding about Bradley, asking more things Kendra would have to lie about. Each one was more painful than the last. That night, she shut her blinds, a pang of guilt still resting in her chest. It’s for our own good… but even after the hundredth time she had trouble believing it, and it kept her tossing and turning that night.
