CHAPTER 11

When Cadence arrived at her office the next morning, it took her a few minutes to realize there was something on her desk. She’d put her briefcase down, hung her jacket up and woke up her computer before reaching over to grab some papers she had left on the side of her desk.

“Ouch,” she said when her hand ran into a metal item. Looking over, she gasped. A metal cloche sat covering a plate. She eyed the dish. Tentatively, she reached out and lifted the lid. Fragrant steam gushed into the air. “Mmm... oh my word.” She closed her eyes and breathed in the savory smell.

Opening her eyes, she reached out and picked up the plate, putting it in front of her. A ramekin of quiche, fresh fruit and three of Hayden’s homemade sausage links stared up at her. Why did Hayden send this? She wasn’t sure how things were between them after the way she left yesterday. With every touch and sweet gesture, she found her defenses against him melting. And especially after hearing about his family and childhood, the nurturing side of her just wanted to hug him and make it all better. How do I keep my distance after all this?

After saying a quick prayer of thanks, she dug in, moaning as the quiche melted on her tongue. Oh my gosh, that man can cook. When she had finished, she set the plate aside, and noticed an envelope sitting under the plate.

Grabbing it, she opened the note.

Grocery store. Two. Don’t be late.

She snorted. “If his ego gets any bigger, he won’t fit in the castle,” she said through a laugh, then paused. “Oh my word, I’m in such trouble. I’m not even put off by his arrogance anymore.” She sighed and rubbed her hands down the front of her face. “What am I gonna do?” She paused. “Do I want to do anything?” She felt the first stirrings of panic begin to work their way through her system. “How do I know he’s not just like Ryan? They’re both wealthy, good looking and full of themselves. Can Hayden really be that different? I mean, he is different, he wasn’t raised the same as Ryan, but still. How do I know Hayden isn’t just playing me as well?” She huffed. “Stop it, Cadence. He hasn’t asked you to date him or anything. You’re going to the grocery store for crying out loud. There is absolutely nothing romantic about it.” Grabbing a pencil and paper she decided to write him back.

Dear Hayden,

Thank you for breakfast. I look forward to learning the inner workings of the mysterious grocery store. Us non-food people have been waiting years for someone to unlock the mysteries behind this industry. I have no doubt your knowledge will be most invaluable.

Cadence

She reread the note several times, then nodded and grinned. We might not be dating, but flirting with someone just as sarcastic as myself is certainly fun.

After finding an employee to run the dishes and note back to Hayden, she pushed the incident to the back of her mind and went to work.
