CHAPTER 22

After too many moments of silence, Matt stood. “Thank you for this talk, Alice.” He threw a large bill on the table, more than enough for their orders, plus a sizable tip. He hadn’t eaten any of his cake and barely touched his coffee.

Alice rose to her feet. “We haven’t come to a resolution yet.”

“I have things to do, Alice. That’s why I’m here in town.”

“What things?”

“I have to clear out their apartment.”

Alice’s mouth fell open. She hadn’t given any thought to practicalities like that. Now she felt like the worst friend in the world. “Let me help you do that.”

“No need.”

“Surely, you’re not doing it by yourself.”

“I am. I wouldn’t feel right employing someone to go through my sister’s belongings. Maybe there will be some keepsakes for Emily.”

“I want to help you, Matt.”

He stared at her. “Okay. Meet me there tomorrow at nine. We’ll make a start. And it’s no place for a baby.”

“Obviously. I know that. My mother will be more than happy to watch her.”

“I’ll see you there.” Matt walked out of the restaurant.

Once he was well clear of the café, Matt wondered how Tracy and Michael could make such a stupid decision. Who leaves a child to a single Amish woman with no means to support herself?

Matt needed to walk to blow off some steam. He would never understand his sister’s decision. Alice still hadn’t produced that agreement she said she had, but he’d never known Alice to lie. And if the agreement did exist, the fact that Michael had gone along with it was even more bizarre.

His head pounded, and he wanted to smash something. He wanted to have a meltdown and probably would have done so if he were in another place. Here, in a public place, he would not lose his cool.

At that moment, he knew he should get back to his hotel as fast as possible.

Suddenly, a shrill voice sliced through his fog of anguish. “Matt! Matt! Over here!”

He groaned internally. It was Jessica, the blogger. She trotted up to him, her boots clicking on the pavement.

“Matthew Reynolds! Another moment of your time?” She panted slightly, her rosy cheeks contrasting with her sharp, calculating eyes.

He didn't even break stride. “Are you following me now?”

“No. I was just waiting for you. I don’t think she wanted to talk with me, but you were open to it, I think.”

“Not now, Jessica. I played nice in front of Alice, but I’m not happy you were at my sister’s funeral with Kylie. I’m sure she told you everything you need to know about me.”

“Yes, she did, but she doesn’t know too much about the situation with the baby. It's a touching story, really. The modern world meets traditional values. My readers will love to hear about it. Who will gain custody? Will the courts be the deciding factor in the baby’s future?”

He stopped abruptly. “Can you leave me be?”

“Well,” she chuckled, brushing her hair behind her ear, “When there’s a story, I won’t let up until I get it.
