Heightened Test Anxiety

Imagine that you thought that each question on a test represented something very important about you: not just whether you knew the answer, but so much more—whether you were smart or competent—indeed, whether you were going to succeed in life. This is the world of the teen perfectionist as she sits and takes a test. Perfectionists maintain almost impossible-to-meet standards for how they do on tests, and they fear that not meeting such standards will invariably lead to disaster.

This overemphasis on performance naturally triggers anxiety. The perfectionist tends to experience heightened dread before taking tests and then may experience concentration problems and acute anxiety, even all-out panic symptoms during the test. It is not surprising, then, that perfectionism tends to backfire, sometimes making performance worse.
