Chapter 21
Katie
âI need to get a nap in,â I say as we walk back to the guest house. âTonight is going to be a rough one.â
âI wish you could call in sick.â Leo gives my hand a squeeze.
âPretty sure I used all my sick days when I was recovering from hypothermia.â
Gerry releases a low-throated growl, alerting us of someone down the street walking toward us. âIs that David Paul?â
âLooks like him,â Leo agrees, while the captain says, âI believe it is.â
We stop walking and wait for him to approach. When heâs near enough, he says, âHeard about your troubles. Thought Iâd drop by and check on you all.â
The men exchange handshakes before the lieutenant gives me a nod and drops to one knee to greet Gerry. âYouâre looking good, little guy.â
Gerry wiggles in response. The lieutenant gives him another pat before standing upright. âHeard it was arson.â
âMost likely,â the captain agrees. âWe didnât see anyone, but we heard a noise before smelling the smoke. Iâm guessing some kind of Molotov cocktail.â
âMore than one,â Leo adds, motioning to the house and the massive destruction.
âYeah.â The lieutenant sighs. âShaw said he thought they probably used an accelerator across the front. Looks like they knew how to inflict the most damage. This is another reason we need to get a fire wagon set up. We talked about doing it last summer, but it didnât happen.â
âA fire wagon?â I ask. âWhatâs that?â
âWe have large water barrels, each holding several hundred gallons. Weâll set them up on a trailer and haul it around as needed to bring water to the source. Iâm sure weâll also discuss adding additional wells. Itâd be great to have a well on every block. Those would help our water supply, too. Any idea who it was?â
âMelvin Cabal? Any chance you can find out if heâs had any visitors? Maybe he sent them.â
âDoubtful. The governor was insistent no one would get in to see him.â
At the mention of the governor, the captainâs mouth moves into a tight line. While he used to be a fan of the office, and the person holding it, things have changed since the governor removed the captainâs command over the hospital. Especially considering Major Stone has zero medical experience. Iâll admit, I donât understand it. I also suspect the captain wouldnât share those feelings with the lieutenant.
Even though Leo and David Paul are friends, questions remain about where Paul will draw the line between personal and professional matters. If Leo or the captain expressed concerns about the captainâs removal and the majorâs assignment, would David Paul inform the general and worsen the situation at the hospital?
Truthfully, I was surprised Captain Williams told Leo and me about his worries. He typically avoids saying anything remotely critical of the National Guard or the governor.
There are several beats of awkward silence until I clear my throat and all eyes turn in my direction. âWhat about Landers? I know they decided moving him to the jail and bringing in round-the-clock nursing staff was the best choice.
