Baby Blues

The question seemed to startle Innara, but she readily nodded. “Of course. Where should I start?”

“How about at the beginning?” asked Eamandian from across the room where he was rinsing out some glasses.

“That’s as good a place as any.” Innara smiled fondly at him before looking back at Miri. “When you fell ill during the Change and we couldn’t do anything for you, I demanded Eerin come and see for himself. Once he arrived, your health improved and you settled almost instantly. Only he seemed to bring you relief of any kind from the pain. When he left, you always invariably relapsed into pain and terrors. But after his first visit, you also started to call for him and seemed to experience lustful urges only you wanted him to satisfy.”

Miri felt the blood drain from her face. “I did?” She couldn’t imagine being so wanton, but then, she hadn’t been in control of herself. At least according to Innara, she hadn’t. “So every healer knows what happened?”

Innara shook her head. “Some of them suspect what led to your recovery, but none can talk about it to others. They all take an oath not to discuss things that happen within the wards. And they’ve been commanded by me, Eamandian, and even Eerin not to divulge anything about your stay in the healing halls.”

Panic chewed on Miri’s insides. “Oaths are broken all the time.”

“Not these. These are held in place by strong magic. They couldn’t talk about this even if they wanted to.”

Relief rolled over her. “That’s fortunate.” She couldn’t bear for everyone to know, however unlikely that had been. If it had been common knowledge, Eerin would already know that he was to be a father. “I’m not ready to share the news yet.”

Innara smoothed Miri’s blankets. “People will come to know, but not before you choose to tell Eerin.”

“To clarify, Eerin thinks that I don’t remember the night...the night we...” God, she couldn’t even say it.

“Though he knows you could remember at some point, he’s operating on the assumption that you won’t.”

Miri scoffed. “Wishful thinking. I would’ve never thought him the type.” Then she sighed. “How angry is he going to be? I can’t imagine he’ll have a good reaction.” What she knew of his general personality and demeanor pretty much told he’d have a hissy fit.

“I won’t lie. It’s sure not to be pretty. He’s not very good at handling his own emotions.”

A snort sounded from across the room. “That’s an understatement.”

Innara tsked. “Don’t you have work to do? Anyway, I say you could be Eerin’s mood twin at times.”

He straightened up to his full height. “Excuse me, I’m much more in touch with my feelings.” He glared at Innara. “You forced me to be.”

“Exactly, so it’s possible to soften Eerin. It only takes the right influence, the right person, to do it.”

Miri held up a staying hand. “Whoa! He hates me and is sure to hate me all the more after I tell him about the baby.” Part of her couldn’t believe the words coming out of her mouth.
