Chapter 18

Rubbing his face, Aiden continued on his path home.

His head buzzed with anxious energy as he walked, unable to focus his gaze or his thoughts. Too much had happened. Or was it too little? He worried he hadn’t apologized enough to Harmony.

Still, he had confessed the truth. That much mattered to him.

She knew the truth and she hadn’t even pushed him away. That had to be promising, Aiden pointed out to himself. There had been no shouting and no tears of anger or hurt.

Although she hadn’t exactly been happy about it.

Thinking back to the shaken expression Harmony had worn while he had confessed everything, Aiden decided he would have to try harder. He had to keep his word and prove himself the man he was striving to be for her.

“It’ll get better. For both of us,” he murmured with determination.

He wanted Harmony to trust him again, to care for him as he did for her. All he had to do was clean up his mess.

Which meant talking to his father. Aiden turned down the road and exhaled, trying to think of how he could discuss this with the sheriff.

It was rare for his father to be wrong, so he didn’t think that this would go over well. There might be arguing. He would probably have to take the discussion outside or into another room so they didn’t disturb his mother.

He didn’t like the idea of arguing. But if it came down to it, Aiden would be prepared.

Coming upon his house, Aiden glanced over the small yard that had been created over time. He’d been here for every season of his life. He knew the dips in the ground as well as he knew the few freckles on the back of his hand. This was and always had been his home.

It was usually a safe place for him. But right now, there were nerves building up inside him that he couldn’t suppress for much longer.

Aiden was determined to talk before supper. He wanted to get the issues off his shoulders before it could get worse. As for supper, he wouldn’t be able to eat a bite until everything had been said.

Fortunately, his father was already home.

He walked inside to find the sheriff pulling a casserole out of the oven. After complaining about the heat, Paul set the dish in the middle of the table and nodded to his son.

“Hey, Pa. It smells good,” Aiden offered. He glanced around at his mother standing on the edge of the room, holding a crochet needle and yellow yarn. “Is that everything for supper? I was wondering if you have a second?”

“Just the rolls. They’re nearly ready. Sure, we can talk if you like. What is it? Something going on?”

Aiden hesitated. “Not much. I just wanted to discuss an update about a case really quickly.”

“Good. I need to do the same, though I thought it could wait until tomorrow. Can’t we enjoy a family meal at the same time?”

He considered it for a second and then shook his head.
