CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Grandma Leo's decorating service

Sue

Leo stiffens and takes a few steps away from me to talk to his boss. I overheard enough when he answered the call to know it was not going to be good news. I’m not exactly in a hurry to hear any more details right now, so it’s no skin off my arse if he wants to have privacy. I trust him to protect me, and I know he’ll tell me what I need to know in a way I can handle it.

That’s the thing about Leo… he just knows how to treat me. Always respectful, never condescending or pitying… but also with enough patience and sensitivity that I don’t get set off into a spiral of anxiety. He’s so damn gentle with me, and it’s exactly what I need. How does he do that? Who taught him how to be this way?

Part of me wishes I weren’t the type of person that needs to be handled with care. But you know what they say about wishes. If you put them in your hands and fart…

Actually, I don’t think that’s the right saying, and it’s gross, so I’m not going to finish the thought.

I decide to check out the bedroom where I’ll be sleeping. It’ll also give me a chance to collect my thoughts and cool my panties.

Damn, that man can kiss.

And the things he says to me could rival the greatest love stories. I just have no earthly idea why he thinks about me the way he does. Maybe he was dropped on his head as a baby or ate lead paint chips when he was a kid.

Kid.

Huh. He hasn’t called me that in a while.

As I enter the bedroom, I’m hit with another reminder of how wrong I was about this place. I’m unsure of how my dreams could be so spot on with the cabin’s exterior but completely wrong about the interior. It’s nothing like the dark, dreary, stark space from my nightmares.

Leo’s created a warm, inviting space here. It’s sparsely decorated, but the warmth and coziness give it woman’s touch. It makes me wonder who decorated it for him or if he did it himself. Then again, nothing about Leo is as it appears on the surface. He looks so fierce and rough — like a big, burly bad boy — but he’s really a teddy bear. Maybe he also decorates like an old southern woman. Who knows?

I run my hand along the smooth, polished wood of the dresser and stifle a chuckle when I see the white cloth doilies lining the top. The bedspread is off-white with delicate ivy vines. The pillow shams — yes, he has them — have the same pattern of lace on the edges as the doilies on the dresser. Man! I’m really starting to think his grandmother decorated for him.

Now I’m wondering if his grandmother is still alive. He doesn’t talk about his family all that much. He seems to share the bare minimum about them. I wonder why that is.
