Conclusion

The “Support” group dealt with specific agendas of patients and family members in which the “sick” role was released and “contributing family member” roles evolved with family permission and group support. The agenda of the group enhanced the ability of members to negotiate with family members about roles and expectations. This network provided patients practice in taking charge of themselves. Even though patients would return to old situations, it was understood by all concerned that the situations would be handled differently by the patient.

This group served to decrease the individual patient's vulnerability to stressors because of the communication of expectations acquired during the meetings. The composition of the external supportive environment was strengthened through joint problem solving. Patients felt a positive increase in their family role as they were able to teach family how to reduce stress.

The “Support” group is one example by which a self-help group served as an interface between the clinic and community to help patients and their families learn to identify and solve their own problems. Occupational therapists should facilitate the family re-entry whenever possible, including fostering the development of self-help groups.
