CHAPTER 14

“I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.” Shouts of agreement rang out in the sanctuary when Pastor Watters spoke. He smiled as he scanned the congregation, and then raised one hand to acknowledge God’s goodness. Being in God’s house always brought him peace, although today he was struggling to keep it. He knew he had to address the reason he was in a wheelchair and he wasn’t at ease about it. He wanted to walk in, but his wife all but rolled him out on the stage herself.

Jeffrey couldn’t sit behind the pulpit so before service, he requested that some of the chairs on stage be removed. He moved over to that area, and locked the wheelchair. He wasn’t comfortable maneuvering it, so he felt it was best if he wasn’t tempted to try. He motioned for everyone to sit down.

“Good morning, Living Waters. I can’t tell you how glad I am to be in church this morning.”

A few people clapped in response.

“Contrary to popular belief, I did not get hurt trying to play basketball.” There were only a couple of members that actually laughed; most were hanging on his every word, waiting to hear the details of his accident.

“No, but seriously, all I can say is, ‘but God’. I was in a car wreck yesterday and I truly believe the enemy wanted to take my life. But God!”

Gasps, prayers, and hallelujahs were uttered in pockets across the room.

“I’m grateful that I was able to make it to church one more Sunday. You hear preachers and ministers plead with non-believers to come to Christ today, because tomorrow is not promised. The reality is, you really don’t know when your last Sunday is going to be! None of us do. So, why do we sometimes allow petty issues to distract us from our main reason for being here? Why would we do anything other than give God our best, all-in, holding-nothing-back praise?”

Kathryn wanted to tap Deacon Bennett on the shoulder and say, “Are you hearing this?” Over the past few months, Kathryn observed that he’d begun challenging every ministry decision made by her husband. She was aware that he had always seemed bent toward the critical, but now he was even more vocal. She refrained from offering her question, and instead, decided to take her husband’s advice and give God praise. When she rose in her all white skirt suit, arms outstretched, and audibly gave God praise, the room could hold back no longer. The musicians petitioned God through their instruments, and members, young and old, stood, shouted, clapped, and danced praises to the Father.

“Hallelujah, Lord! We bless you Father! We thank you, Jesus!” When Jeffrey said the name, “Jesus,” the hairs on his arms stood on end. “Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus! Church do you really know the power you possess when you call on the name, JESUS?”

There was another uproar as the congregation felt the impact of Pastor Watters’ words.
