“I can’t believe I’m doing this shit!” I complained to my brothers.

“Me either. Braelynn didn’t trip like this.”

“Shit, Myla would have. The first thing she asked me when we went to my bedroom was, ‘is this where you bring all your women to snatch their souls?’”

“You lying, bruh,” Kyree said, laughing hard.

“Not at all. I would have been doing just like Kam and getting rid of a perfectly good mattress—”

“And pillows?” I added.

“And pillows. Myla was not about to sleep anywhere that I’d had sex with another woman.”

“Didn’t you just get this mattress? You don’t even bring women to the crib. It can’t be that used.”

“Six months ago, and the only woman that’s ever been here is Vida. Hell, now that I think about it, that’s probably why she’s making me do this.”

We’d finally gotten my “old” king-sized mattress outside, which I was certain someone would get off the curb before long. The new mattress should be delivered within the hour.

“You should have just told her you got a new one. How would she have known?” Kyree said.

“Because she made me go with her to pick one out.”

We sat around my apartment, catching up, while we waited for the mattress to be delivered. Although we’d talked, the last time we’d seen each other was the previous weekend at Kolby’s house, after the twins’ birthday party.

“How is Jae? How is she dealing with the rape?” Kolby asked.

“She started therapy, and she says it’s helping. Even since she’s been here, she’s had a few appointments through video conferencing. She seems to be handling it better. You have to remember, this happened two years ago. She dealt with it alone for a long time. I think she buried it and tried not to think about it as best she could. The fact that the nigga is dead does give her some level of comfort, but it doesn’t take away what happened.”

“Damn, man! I’m glad his blood ain’t on your hands, but I don’t know how you stopped yourself from taking his life,” Kyree commented.

“I ain’t gon’ lie. I went there fully expecting to kill that nigga. He was barely breathing when Myles had one of his boys pull me away from him. He didn’t want his blood on my hands either. When we left, I asked him why he didn’t let me end him. He said his people end lives regularly and sleep well at night.”

“Shit! I thought Myla said he was trying to get outta that life,” Kyree said.

“Yeah, but how does that even work?”

The three of us laughed because we didn’t know shit about the kind of lifestyle that Myles lived. Growing up, our parents kept a tight hold on us and made sure we stayed on the straight and narrow. We got in a fair amount of trouble, but it was regular shit, nothing too serious.

We talked a little longer, but they left when the mattress was delivered. Jaelynn and I had been sleeping in Kolby’s old room. I guess she didn’t have an issue with sleeping where her sister and my brother had sex.
