Stefan knowsâ¦
Chapter 3
Sviatopolk had received information from his scattered spies all over the country about possible disturbances in the hegemony of Volchinia, on the northwestern border of Russia with Hungary. It was critical information that should not be leaked in any way, otherwise panic would break out.
This is what he wanted to say to his wife and confidant, the day he escaped a violent death. He wanted to ask for their advice. No details have been confirmed yet. He did not know how great the danger was to his kingdom. So was it right to attack Volchina with his army to prevent the situation from escalating?
Mira urged him to do just that. He could not risk an escalation. Without a doubt, then a revolution would break out in the whole country!
Stefan, however, recommended moderation. He suggested that he take a trip there, see for himself what conspiracies were being hatched against him, and then act accordingly. He assured him that this was the best tactic.
Surprisingly, the Grand Prince saw the truth of his words. A week later, he was ready to leave. As long as he was missing, Mira would make the decisions for the government together with Stefan. Sviatopolk may not have felt any passion for his wife, but he knew the value of her sharp mind. He may not have wanted her in his bed, but he wanted her as his ally.
Before leaving, he gave an ultimatum to Stefan. He wanted to know his final answer about taking a seat on his board when he returned.
Anxiety, an ugly premonition gripped the heart of the governor of Novgorod. Having learned now what Nadezhda's dark plan was, she was constantly at the side of the ruler. However, since the day of his departure, he had not seen her anywhere. He was not with Anastasia and her entourage. All the palace staff had come together to say goodbye to the departing master. But Nadezhda, silent.
A disturbing idea stuck in his mind. What if he did something crazy again? We trembled at the mere thought.
Indeed, long before the sun rose, she had armed herself with the bow and quiver, full of new arrows, stolen by a guard, and ran into the forest. Set up a caravel in a well-chosen spot. It was on the turn of the road from where the Cursed would definitely pass to reach Volontimir, the largest city of Volchinia. He hid completely from the bushes and trees and waited for Sviatopolk to appear, with the arrow on the stretched bow string. This time she would kill him.
If Stefan dares to interfere, then I will kill him first.
The footsteps of the horses began to be heard from afar. Nadezhda shrugged.
Stefan was also approaching with a wild gallop. If she was right, if she was going to do what she was thinking⦠He had to stop her.
He saw her ready to put her thoughts of revenge into action, and his heart sank. He very much wanted all this to be an exaggeration, the result of his own unfounded fears.
