Elizabeth turned the dial on her locker and rummaged grumpily through the books she kept stacked neatly inside. It was Monday morning, and the world looked considerably less cheerful than it had on Friday afternoon. "Something is wrong with my favorite twin," Jessica had said earlier that morning as she cheerfully buttered a piece of toast. Elizabeth hadn't even bothered to answer. She felt completely out of sorts, and Jessica's infamous grin didn't do much to lift her spirits.

For one thing, Elizabeth hadn't gotten much sleep the night before. She'd been up well past midnight trying to finalize plans for the carnival, and when she'd finally gotten into bed, all she could think about was the unhappy expression on Todd's face when he had dropped her off at home after their visit to the Morrows'.

He hadn't kissed her goodbye, and he hadn't called her later, the way he always did. Even worse, he wasn't waiting for her in the parking lot that morning. And she'd gotten to school early just to look for him.

"Liz," a voice said shyly at her shoulder now. "Can I talk to you for a few minutes? I was hoping I'd find you alone."

Elizabeth turned, and the frown faded from her face. "Of course, Regina," she said. "Why don't we go to the Oracle office and sit down?" she added on impulse. Something in Regina's expression suggested she wanted to have a long talk.

"It's nice in here," Regina commented several minutes later, looking around at the typewriters and piles of paper lining the small room.

Elizabeth giggled. "It's serviceable, anyway," she said, offering Regina a chair. "Jessica thinks it's absolutely hideous."

Regina looks different today, Elizabeth thought, sneaking a glance at her as she sat down. She looks a lot older than she did when I saw her last. More serious—as if something big has happened.

"Liz," Regina began, "I'm afraid I won't be able to be in the fashion show this Saturday after all. Don't worry," she added hastily, seeing the expression on Elizabeth's face. "My mother's going to come up with something to take its place. She feels bad enough as it is. Things have been so crazy around our house that she hasn't been much help to you."

"That's OK, Regina," Elizabeth assured her. "I'm just sorry you won't be able to do it. Is anything wrong?"

Regina flushed. "I'm leaving for Switzerland Friday morning," she said quietly. "My mother told me about the talk she had with you, Liz. I know you know all about the treatments. And I wanted to thank you for keeping quiet about it. It's important to me that no one find out before I go."

Elizabeth took Regina's hand, squeezing it warmly. "I'm so happy for you," she said, her voice breaking with emotion. "I'm going to miss you, Regina, but it'll be exciting when you come back!"

Regina sighed. "They're not one hundred percent certain that they can completely restore my hearing," she warned Elizabeth. "And I'll have to go through a lot of tests, but the way I see it, it's certainly worth a chance.
