As Vesey pondered the possibility of a mass escape, he had to face the grim prospect of failure and death. But there was little to dissuade him from his course. At the age of fifty-four he was very old for his day, already twenty years beyond the average life expectancy for black men in the Old South. (In 1820 there were only 38,000 black men above the age of fifty in the entire country.) At best, he had but a few good years left. If he perished trying to lead his people out of the land of pharaoh, he at least would be spared the frightening prospect of an impoverished dotage in a slave society. But if failure was possible, it was not probable. So unshakable was Vesey’s faith that he was convinced that the “Lord will assist them as he did the Israelites from their Bondage,” not perhaps, through miraculous intervention as much as by divine guidance.3
