Dominik and Dean stood in silence; their mouths slack jawed.

“Genius, huh?” Ava smirked as she crossed her arms.

“Actually, yes,” Dean laughed. “I can see the pattern in the texts. We can’t prove for certain that you’re telling the truth, but that’s better than nothing.”

“What a weird way of saying ‘thank you.’”

Dean rolled his eyes, but he was smiling.

“One last thing, mam,” Dominik offered. “tell me, you talked about using the code to protect from jealous girlfriends. Was that Sophia?”

Ava pushed her lips together. “To be honest, sir, I did not know why he offered that. I agreed for my husband’s sake, of course. He was the one who mentioned a jealous girlfriend. I did not know he was dating anyone.”

“So, when you learned about Sophia, it was the first time?”

Ava nodded. “That is why I did not care. I was mentally checked out, myself,” She admitted, “But he had kind of already prepped me for it. I was just so swept away in the bliss of it all, I guess.”

“Understandable,” Dominik smiled.

Ava could tell that they were going to ask her something else, but the door swung open.

Oliver walked inside.

No one said anything for a second. Oliver blinked at the two uniformed men in his living room, going through his wife’s phone. He looked understandably shocked, but there was something else that was off about her husband. She could not put her finger on it, but something was not… there. She knew him well enough to know that something was wrong, that he was not acting like himself. She paused, pressing her lips together.

Where had Oliver been all day?

“Thank you for your time, Ava,” Dominik offered with a smile. “Just make sure you lock your doors to prevent a break in, okay?”

Ava blinked, then caught on. “Of course, officer.”

He handed her the phone back.

“So that’s how you find the neighborhood watch app,” He lied with a smile. Then, he handed her a smile. “Call me if you see anyone who looks like the burglar.”
