Chapter
Twenty-Three
Outside Buyck, Minnesota
Sunday, October 17, 3:30 p.m.
CRYSTAL REVVED THE Jeep’s engine and inched forward.
She and Shayna sat impatiently, waiting behind a logging truck
that was loaded down with giant tree trunks chained to the
flatbed. Shayna reached over and grasped Crystal’s arm. Her
hand was warm and moist. “I can’t believe this damn phone still
won’t get a signal. Why did we bother with it? I’d like to throw it
out the window.”
“No, don’t do that,” Crystal said. “Just wait. We must be
almost to the town.”
“What the hell is with this traffic jam anyway? We’re in the
flippin’ wilderness! I’m getting out to look.” Before Crystal
could object, Shayna was out of the car on the side of the road.
She shielded her eyes with her hand and gasped.
Crystal leaned to the right and ducked down, trying to see
out the open passenger door. “What?”
“We are near the town, I think. It’s a roadblock up ahead!”
“Hallelujah! Get in.” She put the car in gear, nosed it to the
right shoulder next to the logging truck, and sped past the line of
waiting vehicles. One driver honked, then a series of others.
“The cops here won’t like this, Shayna. Get your hands up on the
dash where they can see ’em.”
Shayna did as she was told, and Crystal was glad she had
because as she steered the car along the shoulder, suddenly she
saw men in black uniforms moving and running. Red and blue
lights flashed. She heard the bullhorn: “Stop the car! Stop or we
open fire.”
Crystal slammed on the brakes and hit the automatic power
window button. She put her hands on top of the steering wheel
and waited for further instructions. “Just sit tight until they tell
us to get out, mi amada. And then do it slowly. No sudden

movements. They might manhandle us a bit. They’ll be nervous
at first. Be patient, okay?” Shayna nodded.
In seconds the car was surrounded, and Crystal found
herself looking up the barrel of a Colt AR-15. She stayed very
still. When one of them shouted at her to get out, she calmly
said, “Lopez. St. Paul Police Department. Badge number 433.
We’re both getting out now, and we’re not carrying.”
She reached down slowly and pulled on the handle, opened
the door and shoved it wide. Keeping her hands in plain sight,
she stepped out, repeated what she’d said before and added,
“My companion is a civilian, and we need help immediately.”
One of the men came forward while others kept their rifles
trained on Shayna and Crystal. Two others slipped cautiously
over to the Jeep to look in the windows.
The leader’s name badge read WERTEL, and his insignia
indicated that he was a Buyck city patrolman. “What the hell is
going on, lady? We could’ve shot you. Why not wait in line with
everyone else?”
Crystal let her arms down slowly but still kept her hands
out, palms up. “At approximately 0700, while camping south of
Echo Lake, three friends and I were accosted by two escaped
convicts. Three of us were tied up, our gear was stolen, and
Officer Jaylynn Savage, St. Paul Police Department, was
kidnapped.”
By this point, the officers lowered their weapons, and Wertel
said, “That’s impossible.
