The mission for the school changed over the years; it closed its high school in 1965 and later added a bachelorâs degree program and a graduate studies program. As the belts of higher education tightened in the twenty-first century, the university closed. Its campus was bought by Hobby Lobby and was donated as an extension for nearby OBU, but the abbey remains at its heart, with todayâs monks still guiding the spirituality of Oklahomans in services at numerous churches.
With its decades of vibrant history, the campus has gained several rumored specters, and none is more famous than the Lady in White. Said to be the spirit of a student who took her own life after a bad breakup, the ghost is a classic mournful spirit. She is said to have appeared in several of the dorms, not only where she once lived; and she has been seen wandering around the campus as if she was lost. Doors have slammed on their own, and footsteps of heeled shoes have been heard ringing down halls at night. Several students have claimed they heard crying and even a young womanâs voice, but they could never find anyone the sounds belonged to. Others have even claimed they saw her, a white, thin figure of a college girl who wept as she walked.
One St. Gregâs graduate told the story of a prank gone wrong. To spook her suitemates, students from Vietnam who were especially sensitive to ghost stories, a girl had her friends dress her in a long white gown. She darkened her eyes and powdered her skin to appear brilliantly white. Wordlessly staring, she passed through the connecting doors and into the neighboring room. One suitemate went stone cold. The other tore out of the room, through the hall and down the stairs. They managed to stop her and confess the prank just after she had pushed through the dormâs doors and gone down the sidewalk. The storyteller imagined that if they hadnât caught her, she would have run all the way home to Oklahoma City.
