Chapter 12

Colden

Alright, I felt a lot better now that Naima had stopped her frantic running. Running away from me? Really? I couldn't believe it. Regardless, she was now standing in front of me, cornered against a wall.

In other words, this was the perfect opportunity for us to discuss so many things. Perhaps it was finally time to be clear about our feelings toward each other.

The truth was, I felt deeply sorry for her after the loss of her father, and a part of me felt compelled to help without putting myself in jeopardy.

Oh, if she ever found out about my involvement with the Venanzi family, she'd likely want nothing to do with me.

"Stay right there," she instructed as I closed the gap between us.

I let out an exasperated sigh. I had assumed she would be okay with me getting closer, but clearly, she wanted some distance. I respected her wishes.

"Alright, fine. We do have a lot to talk about, so this distance works for me."

"I somehow doubt that," she retorted.

"You really think so? After everything we've been through? I thought maybe you had some feelings for me."

She chuckled. "No, I don't think it's possible for me to like you."

"The kiss we shared suggests otherwise."

"That kiss was a mistake. That's why I apologized, and we never discussed it again. But we're discussing it now, so we can finally put this matter to rest."

I took a deep breath. "Okay, if that's what you want." There was a momentary pause. "I need you to know that I truly care about you, more than you realize."

Her eyes widened, her expression showing me she was caught off guard. She clearly didn't expect me to say that.

"That's probably a lie. I saw you talking to that girl."

I shook my head, waving my hand dismissively. "She means nothing to me. I was just toying with her out of boredom."

She squinted at me. "Really? You were talking to her, giving her the impression that there might be something between you two, and you were just playing with her? And you think that's supposed to make me feel better about you?"

"No, not at all. I only mentioned it to highlight that there's only one person my heart truly cares about, and that's you."

Her eyes widened even further, a blush creeping onto her cheeks. "You can't be serious."

"But I am serious. I care about you, Naima. It's one of the reasons why I'm going all out to find your dad."

She averted her gaze, looking somewhat pouty. "It hasn't yielded much help, though."

"No, it hasn't, and I'm truly sorry for that. I'm doing my best, but clearly, my best hasn't been good enough."

In that moment, even though I knew it might be a mistake, I took a step forward towards her. The next thing I expected was her scolding me for doing so, but she remained quiet. Naima's attention was still averted, which perhaps explained her lack of reaction.

"I'm about to do something quite bold in my pursuit to find your father, but I need something from you," I began.
