Chapter 7

The gossip was rampant, as usual. Jasmine heard from several different neighbors about a big conflag in the industrial section of town, involving dogs and Harley. Everybody was talking about how he was trouble right from the get-go. She shook her head at that because she knew that the story was growing proportionately. She had texted Harley a couple times, and, when her phone rang for the umpteenth time, she looked at it to see it was finally him answering. “Are you okay?” she asked.

“I’m okay,” he answered in surprise. “Are you? You’ve left several messages.”

“Yes. The town’s gossiping about your actions this morning.”

“What actions?” he asked curiously.

“About the conflagration in getting the War Dog back.”

“Well, Bowser is with me. That’s for sure, but there wasn’t much of a conflag.”

“Well, I’m glad you got him back. What about the guy hanging on to him?”

“I left him unconscious on the street.”

“You what?” She gasped in surprise.

“Yeah. Well, he wasn’t friendly.”

“I can’t say that I’m upset,” she added. “He threatened me this morning.”

“He what?”

At that, she quickly filled him in on the situation. “That was one of the reasons why I contacted you this morning.”

“Yeah. I’ve been crazy busy. I’ve got two dogs now because I took the other one away as well. And now I’m trying to find a place for them.”

“You can bring them here.”

“No. I can’t do that. You’ve got your mom and your son there.”

“Right, but I have a fenced-in yard as well. I mean, there’s no reason that the dogs won’t help defend us against whoever that shooter was.”

“Well …” He stopped, thinking about it.

“Bring them here.”

“I don’t know how dangerous they are.”

“Why would they be dangerous?”

“Because I don’t know what training they’ve had since they were with the department.”

“Do you think the second one was in the department too?”

“I’m not sure. That’s still in the realm of ‘I’ve got to sort it out.’ I’m at the vet right now with them, getting them checked over.”

“Are they okay?”

“Bowser’s neck is pretty chewed up from the pronged collar the guy had on him. The asshole had it set that, at any time, with even the lightest of pulls, it would cut through Bowser’s skin. Plus he had him wired to a damn shock collar.”

“Oh my. Poor dog.”

“His life is not what it was originally, but we’ll try to make it better now. I just want to make sure no other injuries are on them.”

“I still say, bring them here afterward.”

“I’ll think about it. You’ll let me know if that asshole comes back, okay?”

“Oh, I will. that’s the last thing I want.” She hung up, turned to put on the teakettle, then decided to check on her mom first. She had been knitting quietly this morning. Jasmine didn’t know what her mother was working on, but, as long as she was doing something and appeared to be happy, it was all good. “Mom, I’ll put on a pot of tea. Do you want a cup?”

Her mother didn’t say a word.
