CHAPTER EIGHT

Taryn was standing at the entrance to the classroom when Livia and Allison arrived. She’d informed them the night before that classes began promptly at nine o’clock and she expected them to have eaten breakfast, bathed, dressed and be ready to learn. Both sported damp hair from a shower and were dressed in jeans, long-sleeved T-shirts and sneakers.

“Good morning, Allison, Livia. How are you?”

“Good,” they chorused, smiling.

“Before we go in, I’d like to know if your bedrooms are neat and clean.” Her query was met with Allison lifting her shoulders and Livia’s blank expression. “I’m asking because when you saw your classroom yesterday, you may have noticed that everything is in its own place. There were no puzzle pieces on the floor or books left out. It should be the same with your bedrooms. Now, we’re going upstairs to inspect your rooms and if you left anything out, then you have to put it away.” She smiled. “Let’s go.”

Taryn wasn’t surprised when she saw dresser drawers open with articles of clothing spilling out and on the floor. She ignored the unmade bed because it wasn’t crucial they learn to make a bed when compared to clean and dirty clothes strewn around the room.

“Allison, I want you to separate the clean clothes from the soiled ones. Put the dirty clothes in the bathroom hamper and then come back and fold the clean ones and put them away.” She reached for Livia’s hand. “You’re going to do the same in your bedroom.”

Livia’s face fell. “But we’re going to be late for school.”

“I know, and I’ll have to mark you late. And I know you don’t want to be late for a movie party on Friday.”

She must have gotten through to Livia, as she raced through the connecting bath and into her bedroom. Meanwhile, Taryn quickly made up the twin bed, fluffing up the pillows and placing a worn gray stuffed dog on the window seat. She went into Allison’s room and made her bed, too. After the girls got into a habit of putting away their clothes, Taryn would teach them how to make their beds. Tidiness was essential for them if or when they would have to share a dorm room with another student.

As a freshman at Howard, she had shared a dorm with a girl who would invariably bring food back to the room and leave leftovers under her bed. Taryn lost her temper when the room became infested with insects and other vermin. Her sophomore year fared a little better when she didn’t have to deal with decaying food but dirty clothes. Whenever her roommate stepped out of something it remained there.

By her junior year, Taryn had had enough and moved into off-campus housing. Taryn felt as if she had been redeemed when Jessica transferred from a college in Pittsburgh to Washington, DC, to become her roommate. Jessica was even more anal than she was when it came to putting everything in its place. As education majors, they bonded quickly, and within months, regarded each other as sisters from another mister.
