The next day, Cara was four hours into her shift when a call came through for a cyclist versus bus. She clambered into her uniform with the rest of Green Watch and got into the appliance, and with sirens and lights blazing they made their way through town, towards the co-ordinates they’d been given.

It was a busy high street, and the traffic had come to a standstill because of the accident. Reed, who was driving, had to sound his horn to get people to move, so they could make their way through. Eventually they got as close as they could and Cara clambered from the truck, hearing sirens in the distance as police and ambulances made their way to the accident.

Hodge led the way towards the bus, which was stopped at a weird angle just past its last stop. It must have been pulling away after picking up its latest passengers and collided with the cyclist. But...where was the cyclist?

Cara got down on her hands and knees and saw a bike and a body beneath the bus. The front wheel of the vehicle was half resting on the cyclist’s leg. The cyclist was crying quietly.

‘Let’s get some stabilisers!’ Cara called out, lying down on her stomach and trying to make eye contact with the cyclist, who was just out of reach. Otherwise Cara would have reached for her hand.

As the others placed wheel chocks down, to stabilise the vehicle, Tom arrived alongside her.

‘What have we got?’

‘Leg entrapment, as far as I can see, but I have no idea if the wheel went over her chest or her pelvis first.’

‘She’s conscious?’

Cara nodded. ‘We’ll need to use inflation devices to lift the bus, so that we can pull her out from under there.’

‘Okay. I’ll get painkillers ready for injection.’

Cara looked back at the cyclist. ‘We’re going to get you out of there soon, okay? What’s your name, love?’

‘Penny.’

‘Okay, Penny. That’s it...just focus on me. There’s going to be a lot going on around you, but I don’t want you to worry about that. Just keep talking to me. What hurts the most?’

‘I—I don’t know. My stomach...’

That didn’t bode well.

‘Can you feel your legs?’

Penny paused, then shook her head, terrified. ‘No!’

‘Okay. I need you to stay calm. You may just have spinal shock. We won’t know until we get you to the hospital, so stay positive.’

Penny sniffed and nodded. ‘Okay...’

‘Where were you going today, Penny?’

‘The bank and the p-post office.’

‘Paying bills or taking money out?’

‘Taking out. For a h-holiday.’

‘Fantastic! Where are you thinking of going?’

As Cara kept Penny occupied the rest of Green Watch did their thing, finding the correct placement for the inflation devices that would slowly lift the bus from the patient.

‘Crete. I have family over there.’

‘Parents?’

Penny nodded. ‘I haven’t seen them since before the pandemic. I’ve been saving so I can go. Will I be able to go now?’

‘Maybe not tomorrow, but let’s say yes—you’re going to go to Crete.’

‘I’m going to go...’ Penny looked about her. ‘What’s your name?’

‘Cara.
