CHAPTER TEN

LEAH LOOKED UP at the clock on the wall. Ben was late. He should have been here ten minutes ago! Where was he? Stuck in traffic? If so, why hadn’t he texted or called?

Life was going quite well for them recently. Ben quite clearly making an effort to date her. Woo her. One day he’d brought her flowers, another he’d come to the flat and cooked her a proper meal, to make sure she was eating well. They’d even gone out to see a show at the theatre—an old Agatha Christie mystery.

He’d walked her home afterwards, and when they’d got to the doorstep she’d asked him if he wanted to come in and stay the night.

‘I can’t.’ He’d sighed, leaning in towards her and inhaling the scent of her perfume from her neck. ‘I have an early start tomorrow, and if I stay I won’t want to get out of your bed.’

She’d smiled, closing her eyes in bliss at the feel of his hot breath on her neck, his fingers in her hair, the delicious sensation of his teeth nibbling at her earlobe. ‘Are you sure?’ Her hands had swept under the edges of his jacket and she’d been able to feel the heat and hardness of his body next to hers. And she’d wanted him.

He’d groaned. ‘No…’

He’d stayed the night. And he’d been late the next morning. And they’d grinned at each other like idiots all day long.

That was when the word had got out. That and the fact that now she was quite clearly pregnant, rather than just losing the battle against the sweets she kept on eating.

Gossip had ricocheted around the department like a pinball, but it hadn’t actually been as bad as she’d expected.

‘Congratulations!’ Richard had said, giving her a hug. ‘If he ever drops the ball, then give me a shout.’

She’d laughed. ‘I will.’

‘I’m so pleased for you!’

‘I hope you’ll both be very happy!’

‘You make a great couple!’

There were one or two doubters. She’d been treating a patient in a cubicle one day when she’d heard two HCAs talking quietly near the sluice.

‘Can you imagine getting pregnant by him? He’s hot, but he’s not exactly the commitment type, is he?’

‘No. I bet he’s got loads of kids he doesn’t even know about.’

The comments had hurt, but she’d chosen not to say anything. She knew the truth of Ben’s feelings, and she was the only one who knew the battles he’d been fighting. Ben might have played the field before, but he’d been careful. And he hadn’t slept with every woman he’d spent time with. Sometimes he’d only wanted the pleasure of their company, not their bed. That wasn’t what it had been about.

But she hadn’t said that to them. It was none of their business. She knew how it was for both of them and that was what mattered.

Now Leah shifted in her seat, trying to get comfortable. She was five months pregnant, and awaiting her second and final scan. Everything was moving so fast.
