CHAPTER EIGHT

BY THE END of the week Mason had replayed the kiss over and over in his mind so many times he’d started to believe that he’d hallucinated it. There had been no time to discuss it then—they’d gone back to the bar and Lauren had only stayed for one more drink before slipping away while Mason had been in the bathroom. Since then, they’d either worked different shifts or only seen each other fleetingly in the ER, each of them too busy to do more than cast wary looks at the other person.

Mason sighed, stretching out his back muscles as he took the lift from the theatres to the hospital cafeteria. He was an hour away from the end of his shift. He’d spent most of it operating and what he really needed to see him through the last part of the day, to help focus his mind away from Lauren and how utterly fantastic it had felt to have her back in his arms, was the miracle of coffee.

Entering the cafeteria, he immediately spotted Lauren ahead of him in the queue, his heart giving an excited lurch. He paused behind her, as close as he could without being obvious. It was close enough that the scent of her floral shampoo tickled his nose and reminded him of her breathy moans as they’d kissed as if the world was ending in the alley the night of Grady’s birthday.

Mason tucked his hands into his pockets, out of temptation’s way. It wouldn’t be a good look to tap her on the shoulder and suggest they continue where they’d left off at the weekend, but that was exactly what he wanted to do.

The final hour of his shift would now seem endless.

Lauren reached the front of the queue and ordered her coffee, requesting an extra shot.

‘Make that two of those please,’ Mason interrupted. ‘And I’ll pay for both.’

Lauren began to argue, then she blushed to the roots of her hair.

‘I insist, Dr Harvey. I’ve been trying to buy you a coffee since my first day, if you remember?’

‘Thank you, Dr Ward.’ She glared his way and then moved aside.

The cashier took his money and he and Lauren loitered near the barista, waiting for their take-outs. Mason stood beside her, again at a respectable distance. Like Lauren, he pulled his phone from his pocket and pretended to be engrossed in the screen. With their focus on their phones and the silence shrouding them like a laser field, no one would suspect that there had ever been anything intimate between them. Except Mason itched with the urge to tell her how he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about their kiss. His body was so restless to move closer to hers and whisper something in her ear, to see if the heat of his breath would make her shudder, the way she’d shuddered against him a thousand times before in pleasure, that he wasn’t sure how he could remain so still.

Lauren too was more affected than she seemed.
