CHAPTER EIGHT

Three weeks later Jake once more sat outside Nancy’s home with Gemma, this time in her brand-new car.

“Are you sure about this?” he asked, trying to hide his concerns. There was so much involved…

“We can do this, Jake. You’re the detail man and you’ve organized everything. I’m the sitter. If I need help with the kids, I can call on my sisters or my aunts. I have a vehicle to transport the children to their activities. I have their car seats. I can do this,” she said, her megawatt grin blazing. “Can you?” she asked, one golden-red eyebrow raised.

“I sure hope so.” Truthfully, he wasn’t certain they could carry off this magnificent plan of hers. But he was determined to try.

“Then let’s get Nancy and Jeremy on their way to the hospital in Edmonton. Nothing can happen until they’re out of here,” Gemma reminded.

“True.” Jake exited the car with a heart full of admiration for her intentions, but a gut full of worry about all the things that could go wrong with her incredible plan.

“We prayed about this, remember?” Her big green eyes dared him to voice one doubt. “Are you going to trust God or not?”

As rebukes went, it was a good one. Jake shut down his nagging uncertainties and grinned.

“Well?” she demanded.

“Lead on, Gem. You’re in charge.”

“And don’t you forget it,” she shot back and then spoiled the smartness of that remark with a wink.

“You’re sure the kids will be okay overnighting at The Haven?” He eyed Sophie and Donnie dubiously. “I doubt they’ve ever slept anywhere else but here, and I don’t remember you doing much babysitting in the past—”

“Shh!” Gemma glared at him. “If this place is livable, we’ll come back and stay the night. If not, we’ll sleep at The Haven,” she whispered. “You do your part and I’ll do mine.” She raised her voice. “Right now we’re off to preschool. After that we’re having lunch in the park.”

“Sounds fun.” He knew baby Sophie wouldn’t be a problem. She seemed most adaptable. Donnie worried him. The kid wasn’t quite finished with the terrible twos and didn’t mind expressing his dissatisfaction with his world—often loudly and sometimes for lengthy periods of time.

“This afternoon we’re going to have ice cream in the park,” Gemma said, apparently as aware as Jake of the glower on Donnie’s face. “I’m having maple walnut. Sophie wants vanilla. Donnie’s still deciding what flavor he’d like.”

“I’d choose chocolate,” Jake said. “With fudge topping and lots of sprinkles.”

Donnie’s mutinous expression turned thoughtful as Gemma buckled in the kids. Once she was in the driver’s seat, she rolled down her window.

“You can do this, Jake,” she said cheerily. “With God’s help. See you later.”

With God’s help. He hadn’t even asked for that. He stood there,
