Chapter Fifteen

Dylan pulled back and scrubbed a hand over her face. “I thought we agreed we shouldn’t do this.”

Mira continued to work at the buttons of Dylan’s shirt, hoping to keep the pause momentary. “Aren’t you the one who’s all about breaking the rules and doing what you shouldn’t?”

Dylan sat back but kept her hands on Mira’s thighs. “Not with sex, though. Not with feelings.”

Mira pressed her lips together. A sheep in wolf’s clothing was about the last thing in the world she’d expected from Dylan. “Really? You’re going to be the voice of reason now?”

Dylan had the grace to offer a sheepish smile. “It’s not for lack of wanting you.”

It could have been a line, but she believed Dylan meant it. Which put her in the unfortunate position of deciding whether to agree or try to convince Dylan otherwise. “What if I promised not to hold it against you after the fact?”

Dylan frowned. “That’s not what I’m worried about.”

“Isn’t it?”

Dylan took a deep breath and blew it out. “Okay, maybe a little. I like you. More than that, I respect you. We’ve finally become friends and I don’t want to mess that up.”

She appreciated that on principle, even if it felt like a cockblock in the moment. “I’m a big girl. I don’t need you looking after my feelings.”

Dylan looked her up and down. The hunger remained in her eyes, so that was something. “That doesn’t mean I’m going to disregard them entirely.”

The unexpected chivalry threatened to get on her nerves. Maybe that should have been a red flag, but it only served to spur her on. Going to bed with Dylan was about getting her way now. However she felt about Dylan, she felt very strongly about getting her way. “What if my feelings are squarely in the want to get in your pants category?”

Dylan laughed then. “I’d ask you one more time if you were sure this is what you wanted.”

“And if I said I’m certain it is?”

“I’d kiss you.”

Dylan closed the space between them, covering Mira’s mouth with hers. Unlike before, when the kissing got lost in the sensation of Dylan’s body against hers and the promise of skin on skin, this kiss was all-consuming. All the wanting, all the adrenaline—distilled into pure desire. Exploring tongues, a gentle nip. The brightness of apples and the warmth of whiskey. Time slowed and their surroundings faded, and all that existed were Dylan and the kiss and a resounding yes to the would they, wouldn’t they question that had been hounding her for weeks.

When Dylan finally eased away, a smug smile played at the corner of her mouth. Like the deference before, it had the potential to irritate the hell out of her. But it meant Dylan was finally on the same page and she wasn’t about to get her panties in a bunch over winning. “And then what?”

“I’d look to see if your eyes matched your words.”

She had no doubt her arousal was written all over her face.
