Chapter Nine
Happy smiled as he watched Joy and TJ on the swing set in the park. They were laughing and playing as if they were the best of friends. It was good to see the happy look on Joyâs face and to know, even if it was only for a little while, she was just a kid in a park.
Sheâd been with him and Marc for almost a week now. Theyâd had a few rough moments when she had nightmares or thought she was going to get into trouble for simply being a kid. Happy and Marc had gotten through them, reassuring Joy every time that she would never be physically abused no matter how much she misbehaved.
âHowâs she doing?â
Happy shrugged as he glanced at Dr. Devon Berkley. âSheâs as good as she can be, I suppose.â He gestured to where the kids were playing. âThis is good for her. Iâm not sure sheâs ever just been a kid. She's so serious all the time.â
âSheâs been through a lot,â DB said.
Happy nodded. âI hope that one day, this will all be in her past and she can just be a kid, you know?â
âI do.â
Happy knew he did. DB was married to Nick Hale and helped parent Nickâs niece and nephew, TJ and Hannah. He was also a doctor, so heâd probably seen a lot.
âAny news on her family?â
Happy shook his head. âNot yet. Marc says they canât seem to find where they were living before this.â
âReally?â DB sounded so surprised. âHas Dan or Mike looked into it?â
Happy shot the doctor a quick look. âYou think DEA agents should look into this?â
DB shrugged. âIâm just saying, they have a longer reach than a small-town sheriffâs office. If John canât find anything, then maybe they can.â
Happy knew DB was right, and a part of him knew they should ask Dan and Mike for help. The other part wanted to keep his lips shut in the hopes that no family was ever found. He wanted to keep Joy with him. It was selfish, but he couldnât help how he felt.
âHappy.â
âYeah?â
âI need you to do something for me.â
âOf course, anything.â
âI want you to go stand over by the kids and keep an eye on them.â
Happy frowned. âI can see them from here.â
âHappy, I donât want to upset you, but thereâs a man across the street taking pictures of the kids. I want you to go play with them while I call Nick and Marc.â
Happy gulped as a sliver of fear took hold in his chest.
âYou canât let him know you see him, Happy. Heâll leave before Nick and Marc have a chance to get here.â
âOkay.â Happy got up and tried to walk as casually as possible over to the kids. He plastered a smile on his face that he wasnât really feeling. âHey, kids, who wants to swing?â
âMe! Me! Me!â both kids shouted as they ran up to Happy.
Happy laughed as he scooped them both up, one under each arm. He glanced at DB out of the corner of his eye as he carried the kids over to the swing set.
