The trek back through the Amazon wasn’t as hard as it was coming in. I think that came from us now knowing partially where we were going. Vivian had us all blindfolded again to keep the gateway a secret, and I respected her position as the gatekeeper.

Some things were not meant for the world’s knowledge. Now that we were on a plane, everyone collapsed into their seats. Vivian and Blake could clearly see what our trip to Purgatory was like.

She handed me a shot of tequila before sitting across from me. “That bad, huh?”

“Worse,” I grunted after taking the shot with hers. My eyes darted toward Mel as Mike guided her to the back of the plane where an actual bed was. She needed more rest than she wanted any of us to be aware of.

To our side, I could hear Blake asking my men what Purgatory was like. They each told him little bits of the odd world of personal hells. The two suns that didn’t last as long as ours. Well, it probably could’ve given Alaska’s sun a run for its money in the winter time.

Randy kept telling him about how the creatures looked. Apparently, he had been fascinated by them, but he hated being stunned and paralyzed for a bit there.

“Your friends seem awfully chatty about the adventure. How come you’re not?” Her wise eyes knew I had more on my mind now that we completed our mission.

Sighing, I rubbed my temples, leaning forward on the table between us. “I know we had to do what we did, and we accomplished it. Not in the way we planned, but the outcome of not letting them come back, worked.”

“What do you mean not in the way you planned?” Vivian had a flight attendant pour us each a stiff drink. I didn’t hesitate to take it.

“Luce killed Meta-dick before I got his grace. Improvising, we stole God’s grace and put it into him. I’m not sure what repercussions are going to follow from that.”

“You killed God?” she gasped.

“Yeah. I was the one who ripped his grace clean from his neck. Like I said, I’m not sure what that’s going to mean for any of us.”

“Who will run Heaven?” she asked.

“Shit like that. I didn’t give it much thought while we were in there. I didn’t have the time. If I didn’t get his grace then, Lucifer would’ve come back soulless.”

“How come I feel like there’s more you’re not sharing?” Vivian sipped her cocktail.

On another exhale, I knew I needed someone to know. I needed someone on my side if shit hit the fan. To gain an ally, the best way was through honestly. “When we researched removing one’s grace to put it into a soulless, they gain the attributes and powers of the former host.”

“You’re nervous what might come from Lucifer getting new powers,” she deducted.

“Yeah. To sum it up, there’s just a lot that worries me over it. I’m just trying to keep a clear head. My enemies are gone, and I have my family back.
