But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Romans 8:25

Chapter 10 Hope

“It’s time for breakfast dear,” Peter said as he pulled on his tweed jacket and reached for his cap. “You do remember those new desks were delivered last week. Matthew and Noah promised to give up some of their summer break today to help install them at the school. I’m afraid I won’t be home until later…”

Callie Pearl Evans Parker sat in the rocking chair just staring out the window. She was sullen and looked weak and emotionally drained. Peter was worried, as he always felt when he sensed his wife might be grieving again or aching for something that was clearly out of their hands. She continued to rock and stare out the window, almost listless. He didn’t even think she’d heard him.

“Callie…”

“What?” She had been lost deep in her thoughts, a faraway look on her face.

He was glad he’d decided to move in with his family when they had returned from his tenure as a teacher in the Appalachian Mountains. After the miscarriage she had suffered there, she had pined away in sorrow waiting on him to return from long schooldays. The isolation and loneliness hadn’t been good for her after experiencing so much grief. In addition to Callie being able to enjoy the interaction of a large family here, he was able to help his Father support a large family with part of his earnings as the school teacher of Garfield.

Even with contributing to his father’s household (it was the least he could do since they lived there and Father had helped him with much of his college tuition) he still had managed to save nearly enough to buy a home of their own.

Callie thrived from being a part of his busy and happy family at his childhood home. They still managed to find plenty of time to be alone together and for the most part, her unhappy memories about their loss had begun to fade. Some days were just harder than others though.

“The desks…” he reminded her.

“Oh yes,” she said and turned back to the window absently.

“Are you coming down for breakfast?”

“Uh, in a little while Peter. You go on without me,” she said, trying to sound cheerful. He knew she wasn’t.

“All right dear,” he said. “Maybe we can go on a walk later this afternoon; just us, if it stops raining.”

“Hmm…?”

“A walk…” he repeated. He knelt down beside the rocker and placed one of his larger, strong hands on one of hers and his eyes found hers.

“Yes, I think a walk would do us some good, if it stops raining,” she said, Peter’s warm smile pulling her out of her thoughts. “Perhaps we could just sit together under the porch if it continues… on the swing.”

“Agreed,” he said, glad to see a smile from his wife. “I’ll see you later today then.”

He kissed her on the cheek and left her in their bedroom, deciding it best not to intrude further into her thoughts just now.
