Two hours later, while Chico snoozed in an armchair, I watched the racing from Ayr on the television. I also called Simon Paulson.
âAre you fucking crazy? I canât tell you that!â
âWhy not?â
I had simply asked him if the horse he had declared to run in the fourth race at Market Rasen the following day, Oscar Mike, the one to be ridden by Jimmy Shilstone, would be running on its merits, or was it to be stopped from winning.
âBecause⦠becauseââ
âThere you are,â I said, interrupting him. âThereâs no reason not to tell me. So will Oscar Mike win?â
âLetâs just say itâs unlikely.â
âNo, Simon, letâs not just say that. Have you been told by Anton Valance to ensure it doesnât win, or not?â
He said nothing.
âSilence wonât do, Simon. So tell me, is it being stopped?â
âYes,â he said quietly.
âWhen were you told?â
âYesterday afternoon, after the full declarations were announced.â
âHow?â
âHow what?â
âHow were you told?â
âValance called me.â
âAnd what did he say?â
âHe told me that Oscar Mike wasnât to win.â
âDid he say why?â I asked.
âNo, of course not.â
âSo what did he say? What were his exact words?â
âHe just said two words â Oscar Mike â and then he hung up.â
âNothing else?â
âNo. Thatâs all he ever says. Just the name of the horse.â
He would, wouldnât he? Nothing obviously incriminating to record there.
âBut I know what he means, all right.â
âAnd whatâs the phone number?â I asked.
âNo idea. All it shows on my phone is âNo caller IDâ. No one else calls me like that. Thatâs how I know itâs going to be him. Oh, God. What a mess.â
It certainly was.
âBut Valance must surely call you all the time to book Jimmy to ride your horses.â
âHe does, but he uses a different phone for that.â
âSo whatâs that number?â
There was a pause while he found it on his phone, then he read it out to me and I wrote it down. It started 07, so was a mobile, hence no clue to where he lived, but it was a start in finding him â a good start.
âSo does he also call Jimmy Shilstone with this mysterious âNo caller IDâ phone?â I asked.
âI assume so. Jimmy knows, all right. I certainly donât have to tell him.â
âWhere does Jimmy live?â I asked, slipping the question into the conversation in an innocent way.
âMalton. Why?â
âI thought I might go and see him.â
âHe wonât like that.â
âI dare say,â I said. âBut do you have his address?â
âIâm not so sure I should be giving you that.â
âSo would you rather I called my friends in the BHA Integrity Department to get it? Of course, Iâll probably have to tell them why I want it, and also why you wonât give it to me.â
Simon wasnât to know that Iâd already tried the same tactic once before, to try and get Anton Valanceâs address, but without any success thanks to the damn data-protection regulations.
There was a long pause from the other end of the line. âI donât know,â he said slowly. âI wouldnât want to get Jimmy into any trouble.
