Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development

At the fixed end of the analogy stands Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of the moral development of children. Kohlberg (1927–1987), a developmental psychologist, maintained that the moral competence of subjects develops through three invariant levels – the pre-conventional, the conventional, and the post-conventional – each of which is sub-divided into two stages. This structure of levels and stages is supposed to be ‘natural’ because it is culturally widespread and can in part be empirically confirmed.
