CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Conor

Conor looked down at the deep bowl filled to the brim with thick cubes of beef and dark gravy, and breathed in the aromas of Gunner’s homeland. The hefty dumplings had been cut, ready to soak up all that goodness, and Conor could barely hold back as they waited for Gunner to join them.

“All right, dig in,” Gunner said, and Conor didn’t need to be told twice.

Ben was happily dunking his dumpling in the gravy while Conor groaned. The tender beef melted in his mouth, and the thick, luscious, perfectly spiced gravy was drinkable. The caramelized onions added a tang of flavor, but the true pièce de résistance was when he dipped a wedge of dumpling in the creamy gravy, added the meat and onions, and ate it all at once.

“Beef goulash is amazing,” Conor said to the chef. “You were right. We’ll need lots more of this, or as much as Rick allows us.” They both laughed, knowing that wouldn’t fly too often.

“Perfektni. That’s what I wanted to hear,” Gunner said with his chest puffed out.

“It’s yummy,” Ben agreed as he shoveled more gravy-soaked dumpling into his mouth.

“Eat up. There’s plenty. And if we have room, we’ll have some ice cream before bedtime.”

“Yesss,” Ben hissed in happiness. Something he’d picked up from one of the team for sure.

They tucked into their meals and didn’t come up for conversation until their goulash was gobbled up.

“Do you want some more?” Gunner asked as Conor wiped his plate clean with a piece of dumpling.

“You bet. I’ll get it. Sit and relax.”

Gunner nodded.

Conor set his plate on the counter and went to get the pot when he noticed the lack of dirty dishes in the sink.

“Hey. You already rinsed the dishes and put them in the dishwasher?”

“You bet.”

“Haven’t you ever heard of the cook not having to do the dishes?”

“I find it easier to clean as I go.”

“Well, don’t touch any other dishes ’cause I’m going to do them.”

“Okay, okay,” Gunner said, raising his arms in surrender, but he couldn’t hide his grin.

Hell, we do sound like an old married couple.
