Chapter Sixteen

SAM

Five hours earlier

“Are you sure you want this, Rose? I could go out there right this minute and tell everyone that the wedding is off…”

“After all this drama? Please,” she scoffs, rolling her eyes at me. My shoulders drop in resignation as I try to think about what to do. I don’t know what is going on with me but as time for the ceremony inches closer, my anxiety increases.

This is the reason I left my apartment, walked into Rose’s, and requested to see her alone. Her sister, Clarissa was doing her make up when I walked in while her mother sat on the sofa, painting her nails. Rose’s house was busy but amidst all that, I could smell the air of tension in the room.

Rose didn’t ask for permission from her family. It was just like they understood so she led me into her room and pointed me to the wooden reclining chair close to the window while she walked to the bed. I chose to stand for the sake of the conversation we were about to have because sitting would definitely not convey my emotions properly.

“What do you want, Sam?” She asks after a while of silence. I pinch the bridge of my nose, inhale and exhale.

“We started off on the wrong foot…”

“Because you were an asshole who thought that it was cool to disturb the neighbors with loud music,” she interrupts.

“Yeah. I’m sorry about that,” I say casually, but meaning every word of it. “Look…I know that this marriage is a fake one but I truly appreciate you for doing this for me.” She glances at me for a moment and I think that she is about to say something but she shuts her mouth immediately. Taking that as my cue, I continue. “This company means a lot to me and I know that this contract must have affected the flow of your life in one way or the other, and for that, I’m sorry,” I say sincerely.

My heart thuds painfully in my chest. I hate calling this marriage a fake one. The last couple of months are an uncomfortable show that this means a lot more to me than I’ve been accepting. I have been constantly trying to remind myself that this is a contract, but the more I try, the deeper I feel.

“This sudden niceness doesn’t suit you, Sam. I’ll appreciate it if we just get this over and done with.”

That was fifteen minutes ago. That was before I offered to go out there and call off the wedding. I’ve been fidgeting and anxious about this. Nobody knows this but it’s the biggest sacrifice I’ve ever had to make in my entire life. Last night, my heart was filled with guilt and sadness. Guilt for what I'm about to do to my family and Rose, and sadness because this is not what I want.

Marriage has always been a big responsibility and I know that. I've seen my grandparents struggle to keep their lives and memories alive.
