Ashley

I noticed them in the back, deep in conversation. He sat with his legs outstretched, relaxed with a hand underneath his chin. As I walked towards him, my lips parted. His blond hair was brushed back, neatly ending at the nape of his neck. He looked a little on the casual side as well in linen trousers and a crew neck long sleeve. Things would be so much easier if this man wasn’t so hot. I would be able to hate him for everything he continued to put me through.

Jerry was the first person to notice me. His eyes lit up, but something about him made my skin crawl out of place yet I broadened my smile and stood above them. I could feel the moment Carson’s gaze locked in on me. All the hair stood on my body, and my veins surged with electricity.

“Good afternoon, everyone. I apologize for my tardiness.”

I took my seat next to Carson, clearing my throat as his gaze continued boring into my skull.

“Nonsense,” another man said, waving me off. He looked like a native, dressed in pure white gowns and head covers. “We know women need their extra time, I think it’s something we’re all used to.”

The rest of the men nodded in agreement. My eyes locked with Jerry’s who hadn’t said a word since I arrived but smirked at me the entire time. I looked down at the table instead. The tension was so thick, it felt like I was suffocating. Carson’s heat radiated onto me, and from the moment I sat down, he was as stiff as a board.

“This is my newest marketing intern, Ashley Hill,” Carson announced. “You remember Jerry from last night and a few other faces. This is Mr. Manar, he couldn't join us last night but he’s based here.”

Mr. Manar outstretched his hand and I briefly took it. He shook once before releasing.

“I hope it isn’t inappropriate to say that you are simply stunning, Ms. Hill. Carson has brought others along before but none quite as beautiful as you.”

“I second that,” Jerry finally spoke up. “I’ve been telling her since last night.

Carson twitched under the table, and a smile grew on my face. “You’re too kind, Mr. Manar, thank you.”

I took the chance and looked up at Carson, but he was staring straight ahead. His face was fixed with a harsh thin line, obviously displeased, and I settled in my seat, crossing one leg over the other. I allowed my eyes to linger for a minute more, and his jaw ticked. If he clenched his jaw any harder, his teeth would shatter in his mouth.

“Where are you from?”

I turned back to Mr. Manar, plastering the smile back onto my face.

“New York City.”

“Ah,” he sighed. “It’s a little too busy for me. I travel often but not many places can top my city.”

“I agree. If I could, I’d move away from New York and settle somewhere else. Somewhere a little slower… with nicer people.”

“Mm,” he hummed in agreement.
