SHE DROVE TO Jackie’s, her apprehension tinged with excitement.

Margo climbed the staircase slowly, soaking up the lingering warmth from the autumn sun pressing against her back, burning through the fabric of her shirt. Muffled music met her as she reached the porch and stepped up to the beach-weathered red door. Wasn’t there something about people who had red doors? Margo couldn’t remember the reference. She lifted her hand and knocked gently. The door opened and Jackie stared at her, an expression of surprise on her face as her gaze raked over Margo. “Hi,” she said, a slight question in her tone.

Margo smiled awkwardly and held up the heavy mason jar. The liquid moved like gelatin. “I was over at Brent’s, and Collin wanted me to bring this by, so, here. Apparently, he thinks I’m his new little delivery boy. This,” she said, shoving a jar toward her, “is from him.”

Jackie tilted her head, causing her hair to cascade from her shoulder and dangle at her side, but she didn’t take the offered jar. Margo glanced down. Jackie’s dark leggings were sprinkled with various shades of paint as was the shirt she wore, the bold white letters stating I need coffee right meow peppered with green. “Huh, the color is different,” Jackie said, drawing Margo’s gaze upward.

“Yeah, he said this one is a replacement for the one Brent usually makes you.” Margo lifted her head fully and met Jackie’s stare, her gaze a vibrant hazel in the late afternoon sunlight spilling over the front porch.

A kettle whistled from within the house, halting their stare down. Shit, Margo could get lost in those eyes.

“Do you want to come in for some coffee or tea?” Jackie said over the shrill cry. Margo nodded and followed Jackie into the living room, which seemed unchanged from the few nights prior. She closed the front door behind her and stepped over to the worktable, eyeing the deep gouges on the surface while Jackie hurried to silence the kettle. The wood had been wounded by something ragged and sharp, and Margo remembered the state Jackie was in before she bit her. Horns had crowned her head, white and pointed, pressing through her tight hair. Although her face had remained the same, her eyes had changed from her dark obsidian to bone white, as pale as the horns shooting from her head. Margo knew she should’ve been scared, should’ve been terrified of the monster before her but she hadn’t been. She found Jackie beautiful in both forms.

“Which do you want?” Jackie asked, disrupting Margo’s memory.

Incense burned on a shelf in the corner of the cluttered living room, the scents wafting in Margo’s face as she walked past the smoke. “I could kill for some coffee right now, but whatever you’re having is cool,” she said. The last time Jackie offered her tea she ended up not getting said tea, and she wondered absently if this time would be a repeat.

She walked around the table, her gaze falling upon a painting secured to the wall.
