The biggest single achievement of the Guinea Pig Club is to have helped every member to save his face. His ‘other’ face, that is, in a psychological sense, so that he could securely take his place once more in society.

Archibald McIndoe may have been recognised by officialdom for his plastic surgery achievements, but it was this other saving of face that had the largest impact, not just on his patients, but on the community—including health workers.

One of his Guinea Pig Club graduates became a deputy medical officer of health, another patient who had been badly disfigured was so inspired by McIndoe that he returned to Queen Victoria Hospital as a fully qualified surgeon and trained under his former plastic surgeon, Archie McIndoe.

McIndoe got his own face time when he graced the cover of a 1948 edition of Time magazine.
