In addition to a physical exam, your veterinarian will also want to ensure that your new puppy is up to date on their vaccines. Vaccines prevent illnesses by introducing a small dose of the disease to the immune system and allowing for the creation of antibodies to fight it off without infecting the dog. Vaccines are incredibly important to ensuring your Great Dane’s long term health and are not to be taken lightly.

Additionally, if you wish to utilize a doggy daycare or boarding service at some point, these businesses will require proof of up-to-date vaccination records before allowing your dog into their facilities.

Below is an outline of the generally accepted puppy vaccination schedule for the core vaccines. Core vaccines include prevention for parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, and rabies.

Non-core vaccines are given depending on the dog's exposure risk. These include vaccines against Bordetella bronchiseptica, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Leptospira bacteria. As always, follow your veterinarian’s recommendation for any non-core vaccines.
